The idea of the on off, food, and plain water is so that salts dont build up..
When you put nutes in your water, and the water dries up, your left with salts.... when you water with fresh water, the fresh water absorbs the salt, and the excess nutes are taken up with the water...
so yeah Technically they do get food with every water, just in varying amounts.
