Grow tent temp shot way up from changing from metal halide to HPS ?

My 3x3x6 grow tent has a 600watt dimmable ballast dimmed down to 400 watts . My temp was around 80 degrees while running the 600 watt metal halide bulb dimmed down to 400 watts. I switched to flowering today and switched out metal halide lamp for hps today while changing to 12/12 . I had to leave the house so I figured I'd test the bulb quickly to make sure the bulb wasn't a dud . I kept the thermometer in the tent and the tempurature shot up to 90 degrees. Why is this? I thought hps ran cooler. I have the bulb dimmed to 250 watts for now but need to cool the room. So I can bring it back up to 400 watts mabye even 600 watts if there's any way possibly with a portable ac unit to cool the closet the tent is in. Any ideas how to cool? Is a portable AC unit an efficient way to get my temps down ? Are the units loud? Btw it is cooled by a cool tube hooked up to a carbon filter with a fan pulling 333 cfm out of the tent.

Btw the metal halide was a cheap no name brand bulb and the hps is a light enerG super HPS at 97000 lumens.

^ and what are you growing with? Cfl? No let me guess your "rocking" the LEDs LMAO.

1. Go buy a GE lucalux 600 watt hps for $60. You will thank me later

2. Get some fans to blow cool air in the bottom and suck hot air out the top of your closet. Simple 8" booster fans will work. Just build something out of cardboard or what not to make it light proof. ...like open the door enough to tape a 1foot wide piece of heavy cardboard with your fans installed into it. I hope your getting what I'm trying to convey

Your looking at $70 for 2 fans

Or go the portable AC route.

.
ha ha knew I would catch some fish with that comment about hps. Please do note that I did not say hps lighting is bad lighting, just some observations.

I'm using T5s with cheap led ufos.

First running a 600 watt bulb on anything less than 600 watts is hard on the bulb. On the 400 setting use a 400 watt bulb, 250 a 250 watt bulb.
HPS do run warmer than MH. Also the additional red spectrum can play games with your thermometer if its placed directly in the light. It will absorb heat from the IR and can give a false reading. Try placing it out of direct light and see what it reads. Because a 5-6 degree rise I can see with the change. 10 sounds like a lot.

^ +1 on under driving your bulb is hard on them

Also, and you won't find any documentation that recommends it, you can drive 400 MH at 600. I wouldn't suggest it in a non air cooled hood though. They do tend to get pretty hot. You only get 6 months from a 400mh running at 600 but you should replace them at 9-12 months anyways. Plus, I've found the sun master MH to be just as effective as the expensive ass "super blue grow bulbs".

1000bulbs.com has 14k? MH bulbs for dirt cheap. Good growth and short internodes

Where would you suggest putting the thermometer

OMG you left the door so wide open. Anywho, I put several thermometers around the room and one within the canopy ( in the shade). Because I'm an anal fuck...who happens to also grow some mutha fuckin dank ass bud, I use a laser thermometer to get temp ratings on the tops of the buds. I never ever never go above 77 at the tops in the last 2-3 weeks. All your doing is cooking the terpenes out of your weed. Lights also get raised in the last 2 weeks.

If your running 600. Seriously look at the lucalux. Better then horti IMO and you can score them for $55

so comparing your laser therm and your various tests around your grow room, where do you suggest puttin a probe if I wanted an estimate of the temp at the top of the canopy?

The price is right for sure. I pay 80 bucks for a 600 Hortilux @ bulkhydro.com with free shipping.
Not trying to start an argument by no means. But I have researched the GE bulb(they do make great bulbs for sure)and its spectral output and PAR rating is almost identical to the Sunmaster. The Hortilux in comparison sports a broader blue end spectrum and red end spectrum than either. Side by side its really hard to tell a difference. But the deeper blue spectrum of the Hortilux has always given better resin production than any other HPS bulb I have used. The deeper blue spectrum also shows when vegging under a Hortilux HPS. Just a bushy as if you vegged under MH with better growth rates. Those are the reason I personally choose Hortilux.
