Go LED if you want to have a long term reliable low maintenance, low power consumption & low heat option.
Go HPS if you want to deal with more heat, less consistent lighting and much more maintenance and power consumption.
A properly maintained HPS DE/SE garden will have the bulbs changed out every 12-16 months.. For me that was $80 x 6 + tax: +$500/yr..
A properly maintained LED fixture should require no maintenance other than basic dusting/cleaning and should last you several years before needing an upgrade which by then the light should've paid itself off many, many times..
Main Pros / Cons I've learned personally:
HPS: More Yield, More Heat, More Wiring, More Power Consumption (More Wattage (Pay More) & Amperage) & More maintenance (Spend More Time & Money).
LED: Less Yield (Not enough to outweigh savings from electricity costs & Heat issues), Less Heat, Less Wiring, Less Power Consumption (Less Wattage (Pay Less) & Amperage) & Less maintenance (Save Time & Money).
If you plan to just do a few grows to see if its for you or w/e then sure get HPS and over time you will definitely spend more, especially as more energy efficient appliances come out over the years. HPS is OLD SKOOL and will cost you just like an old V8 truck that gets 10 MPG and requires 7 quarts of oil vs a newer 4 cylinder that gets 30 MPG and requires 4 quarts of oil.
Up to you!
