Growing in Africa

I'm looking to start an indoor grow in Africa, but would like as much input as possible on the setup of the grow room. To start off I was going to grow probably one plant, and it it worked out well I would expand the grow. I am not a very experienced grower in general so all advice is gladly accepted. Please keep in mind there are no hydroponics stores around here, but if there is something I absolutely need I can get it shipped, although that would not be my first option.

I am thinking of doing a DWC setup as the plant will grow quickly and it should be cheap and relatively easy to do. I was going to use HID lighting, but considering the electricity cuts out here every so often (especially when a lot is being used) I thought it may be better to go with an LED setup. This would be a more affrodable option as well. If you guys have any ideas for containing the smell I'd appreciate it, I don't know of any place around here I can buy a carbon filter.

Lastly, I haven't decided on a strain. It's always hot and humid here and I hear Sativa's are best for that kind of climate. Any input on strains I should try groing? Or seed companies that you all like.

SO much easier growing in America. ANY information to help me get this project started would be greatly appreciated.

It's probably like growing anywhere. Especially if you're doing in door. If supplies are hard to come by and you're a rookie I'd suggest dirt growing. I just finished my first grow and it was pretty easy. Much less fuss than hydro. What country are you in?

If you choose LED over HPS, understand that the savings may not be as substantial as you think. HPS has very high efficiency and effectiveness and is very hard to beat. That means only the highest quality LEDs (most expensive) can even outperform HPS in terms of efficiency. With cheap LEDs, HPS will be more efficient to use, and provide excellent results.

Do a lot of research before spending even a cent on LEDs. HPS has an efficiency of about 30-35%, which is actually higher than most commercial LED units.

DIY LED can get as high as 50% efficiency, but at an extremely high startup cost for less and less gains.

check out ledgrow.eu his lights are pretty good, and at a reasonable price. He also offers a diy guide for making your own.

I only use HID lights (MH/HPS). I don't know a lot about LED. I don't know if you have the option of growing outdoors where you're at But there are some African landrace strains that are very nice like durben poison and Malawi (one of my personal favorites). I would stay with a strain that would grow good indoors and outdoors over there. That way after you get your grow room up and going you can sneak a couple clones outdoors.
DWC is good but if this is your first grow i would start off with more then one plant. That way you can try your hand at different training methods. It will also allow you to do some side by side experiments to see what kind of adjustments you can use.

Just out of curiosity what kind of water are you gonna use in your DWC? Do you know the PH and ppm of your tap water? I am always curious about the water qaulity in other countries And how it affects hydroponics. I'm guessing you just buy RO or some other distilled water
