Growing in HAY

I was over at my dads the other day and he had a few blocks of hay. He said he was going to be growing tomatoes in the hay. Has anyone ever heard of this? Could this be done with cannabis??

Hay might work if it was compact enough to support the plant but it would not provide the plant with the essential nutrients it would need. You would have to provide all the nutrients as if you were growing it hydroponically. It would basically be a pain in the ass that is not worth the effort IMO.

Yeah, I figured it would be somewhat like growing hydro. I doubt you'd get the same results though. My dad thinks he's pretty slick growing in that hay though.

He's probably planting in the ground and spreading the hay around the plant 1) as a ground cover to conserve moisture and discourage weed growth and 2) to provide a structural base for the tomatoes once they begin to develop, so they avoid direct contact with the soil (direct soil contact with the fruit leads to fungal and other diseases).
