Growing Medium

Im just starting germination for a new grow. Im gonna try out hydro for the first time. I have one of those little greenhouse kits for $5 that uses coconut fiber as the medium to start. I was wondering when i transfer to bigger pots would river rock and/or red lava rock be acceptable mediums? I cant seem to find any clay pellets in my area. Also, if they are, is one of them better to use? or should i use them mixed together?

hello hendry, im not too sure if its bad or not but i would go with the lava rock due to how many voids and air pockets are in the rock. to me it seems like it would have the same properties as the clay pelets. I would give the rock a good 24hr soak before using it.

stick with the coconut fiber, it is good. They often sell it at the local hardware/plant store. "coco coir brick"

The store i went to doesnt actually sell coconut fiber just these little 5 dollar kits with little coco pellets that expand to the size of the plastic. It would get pretty expensive to buy enough of it. I would like to know when i actually move my seedlings to dwc what i could put around the fiber in the net pots.
