you can trim the roots, but I've seen them up to 6' long. just keep an eye for yellowing or fungi.
if you spot any flush and trim then bath in a solution of peroxide and water for 10min. a cap per 5 gal otta do it. then change your water check ph and nutrents.

i wouldn't keep moms long term in hydro. it's much easier, and a lot less work using soil. you can cut roots away/top/fim and x-plant, controlling size.
