Hi,

9. Read and Search First - Read the crap out of this website. There is a lot of good info in the GrowFAQ. Make sure to look there before you post. Do a search before you post. I can't tell you how many people post the same questions over and over and over when they could have done a 20 second search for the answer. People are going to be less inclined to spend the effort to help you if you demonstate that kind of laziness. And use your head. Don't trust or rely solely on everything everyone tells you (especially me.) People mean well (like me), but they often are just telling you something that they've read and not experienced themselves (sometimes like me.) It's just hard to know when you can't see, touch, live with the plants yourself.

I'm sure not everyone will agree, but that is what I've learned so far and believe to be true. I'm sure I'm wrong about some of it. However, I sure wish I had started with all of this info. It would have saved me a lot of headaches at this point.

Good luck.
I tried my hardest looking all over the place on this website and tried the search feature but got no where. maybe I was typing in the wrong stuff. who knows? sorry. :( I'm not being lazy. I honestly have done days of research on this stuff. no lie. lol. but to no avail apparently. Fortunately you have come to save me with good information. I'm going to read your grow journal, maybe there's some useful info there???

so I just got back from walmart. for now I got 8 23 watt bulbs 1600 lumens each. and all the little light things for it. I don't plan on going big so I think that should be good for now in the state that the plants are in. the potting soil I got is Miracle Grow Moist Mixture. I also found those light thingies that you were talking about so I didn't have to rig my own. you could buy the cord and the light separate and they were like 2 bucks each. super cheap!!!

the potting mix says it feeds up to 3 months? is this true or do I need to add more nutes to it at a certain point?

perfect answer thank you very much. but why do you say not to use soil with nutrients already added?
soil with nutrients added, specifically time release nutrients are an asspain in the long run. when you experience a deficiency or a burn you cant guess exactly whats in the soil.. how fast its releasing or not.. time release nutrients are normally little beads of crap that release at some interval. they arent evenly distributed in a bag of dirt either.

if you use a mix like promix or fox farms and you add your own nutrients you have total control.

I've been using MG with Nutes and in my 5 months of growing I haven't had any problums yet, but I gess it all depends on how the person grows

Hey Immacomputa,

I wasn't trying to say that you were lazy or anything. It was more just a general statement. Sometimes its super hard to find stuff on this website, so no worries! :)

I wouldn't add any nutes to pre-nuted soil for at least two weeks. Someone told me that they did a complete indoor soil grow without adding any nutes at all. Don't get over anxious with nutes and when you start using them, use them very sparingly (like 1/4 strength) to see how the plants react. Show pictures when you are thinking of starting nutes and get people's opinions first.

I recently decided I need an immediate upgrade in lighting and have been lacking in it and just barely making it by with the fluorescents I have. I was looking into this item here ALL NEW 400 watt HPS Grow Light High Pressure Sodium w - eBay (item 370048611005 end time May-26-08 19:57:00 PDT) and was wondering if you guys thought it could provide enough light for 9 young plants (assume that some will be males or die) and I only expect like about 4 to make it (if I'm lucky. lol). I do plan on closing off some of the room so that the light is more concentrated and hopefully eventually putting mylar around the enclosure.

If your gonna upgrade your system, you should go with Metal Halide bulbs at the moment because they put out more blue light which is better for vegging. HPS is best for flowering because it puts out more red light.
I found this thread very helpful when I started to grow:

yeah I read that, I can't afford the extra metal halide bulb this time around, but maybe next time. 400 watt hps should be good enough though for that many plants right?
