Hi has anyone ever grew tobacco? Is it legal?
I would like to grow 10 to 15 plants I live in PA. Any help please.
I have grown tobacco for over fifty years and each year the plants seem to do better.
Right now we grow about 9 different varieties, most are used in native ceremonies, because we grow organically.
You are allowed by law to grow 13.5 kilos or close to thirty pounds, this is dry weight and for personal use only, you can not sell it.
All tobacco is cured at least 1 year for cigarettes, and at least 4 years for a good cigar.
It must be hung up in an airy barn and fires burned (flue cured) or may be sun cured. If the plant is for smoking, you must cut off all seed heads as they form on the top and between the stem and large shade leaf.
If the plant is for seed, let it do its thing, you will get millions of seeds off each plant. When we harvest for smoke, we split the thick fleshy stock down the center and let it fall and stay in the field over night.
We then pick up and tie into "hands" to hang. If the tobacco is still green, it means there is still chlorophyl in it and must be sweated and or dried further.
Seed is easy to get, it is available all over the net.

I grow from seed every year starting in January.
