He's supposed to have drawn long before the suspect (!) turned the gun toward him. He should have had his weapon in hand and in condition Now before the door opened.
Mind you; i never wore a uniform, so i don't know the ins&outs of real-life tactical firearms use. But in the play world of Tactical Pistol, you drew when the buzzer blew. cn
He shouldn't have entered the residence period beat-cops do not do hostage negotiation. They have specially trained teams that we pay out the nose for to avoid this exact situation. Not worries though nothing will happen to him, he killed everyone in the room.

Sad story.... There is a discussion over here in ireland just now about giving the gardai (police) tazer things... would be interesting to see what you's americans think about that... ???
More than one person has been killed by TASERs here in the US. I suppose I would rather be TASERed than shot with a 9mm or .40 caliber handgun though.

The phrase that stands out for me is Rak's "we don't have all the details", and I yield to that.

Maybe getting the response team into play would have taken much too long. On the one hand, we need to be able to let the responding officer make the judgment call. on the other, the fact that he responded alone without backup is a bit of a chinscratcher. Fwiw. cn

The officer are not allowed to make judgment calls they're suppose to back off and buy time until a negotiator can arrive. They try to avoid "judgment calls" that lead to everyone dead.

I didn't realize that that is the case. I believed that the first responder has fairly broad discretion until others arrive at the scene. The cop job is tougher every day. cn

It is up to the first responders judgement, you are not required to wait for anyone. Here all alaska state troopers have hostage training, it's a crash course pretty much. You are always supposed to error on the side of caution. But every law enforcement agency has a different policy.
