yes, they are rare, but not a lot of people are looking for them, so they are not sought after. we have a body shop and a guy is getting a 78 ram deisel redone to the tune of 40K. after you harvest one of those trees, bring it by our body shop and then you can take it to barret-jackson and it would be extremely sought after. And the new power wagons are legit rock crawling machines.

i am not much for playin in the dirt, i got a chopper.:bigjoint:

I'd do rebuilt.. new bearings, gaskets, inspect gears...etc... used that failure shit can happen all over again..If it was automatic I'd say yeah..I made the mistake with old Borg Warner..should have rebuilt by a trusted and close enough to beat up mechanic...
instead of used..a few $$ more but peace of mind..

from the sound of it you just need syncros and bearings. full kit with the bearings would only run you about $150 if youre a do-it-yourselfer. and if it needs 2nd and/or 3rd gear those are about $30ea. you should be able to see if the clutching teeth are worn by shifting it into 2nd by hand. there is no less complex tranny than that. just make sure the plastic inserts are still on the shift forks. they fall off easily and you can have problems shifting because the forks don't fit tightly on the syncros and wobble around. i've sold alot of tranny's because of a guy missing those little $.50 plastic pieces. i can give you the contact info for a couple places out there you can buy the parts direct if you decide to do it yourself. gl whatever you decide to do.

the plastic pieces are gone. thank you for that, i did not realize those shoes were plastic. i saw the pic in the manual and was wondering where those were. i think that was the problem to begin with. the previous owner rebuilt it all and i think he never had those put on. you can see the fork is worn. it's not broken and i found no pieces in the bottom. i pulled the inspection plate and the magnet was covered in fine shavings but no big chunks. i think i do need to replace that one fork and the syncros are all sloppy. it never did shift right.

it looks broken but it's not. it's just the casting. it is hella worn though and ready to break. IMG_0114.jpg

it is really friggin simple. :blsmoke:

yeah its just worn. those shoes have been missing for awhile. the guy probably put it back together without them. a couple inserts and a new fork would get you back on the road. just a matter of how long you plan to keep it. if you pop the roll pin out and the freeze plug at the end of the cover you can take the fork off easily. just be careful. theres a hole under the rail with a spring and a 3/8" ball bearing. hurts like a bitch if your hanging your head over it in a vice. lol

ping, right in the noodle. lol

i'll pay a few extra dollars and have it done with a warranty. :blsmoke: i can do it, i'd just rather not have to do it twice. i usually get it right the second time. lol

$360 dollar rebuild. had 2 shifting forks replaced and shoes added to them. :-o

i got the call at 11:30am that my transmission was done. at 2:00pm i had my tools cleaned up and my hands washed. i would not have been able to do this so quickly if it weren't for my wife. she was manning 3 jacks and handing me tools. we banged it out in 2 hours even with me taking smoke breaks. it all slid right together.:hump:

i had to run and get oil. it's topped off and my battery is charging. i should be on the road in an hour or two.
