Sounds Purple Punch, looks great but hardly any smell or taste
that's what i heard about the purple punch, beautiful plant, the most beautiful plant i ever seen, but nothing more, no smell no taste, but gets you high, not super strong but gets the job done.

Ya the sweet terp profile seems to be in a lot of crosses now. Thats why the wyeast sour secret I just ran was such and awesome surprise- had such a loud sour/gas nose (was the loudest sour I've grown in years)
This year im in love with a beautiful Kali mist with the most beautiful smell I've seen in years, full Metallic smell, like rusty iron, like Copper, is from and old +/- 2005 pack, only 1 popped.IMG_20210517_201155.jpgIMG_20210517_211310.jpg

Oh, for sure. It's mostly economics. Tried out ~18 strains with this approach and still discontinued more than half of them. I'll be more adventurous.

There are some genetic redundancies in my current stable (e.g., 3 different thin mint GSC crosses (2 sativa-dom, 1 indica-dom) (GSC comes in under OG Kush)), but I've got some good genetics too:

4 sativa-dominant strains:
- 5 Alive
- Animal Crackers
- Bruce Banner (1.0, 2.0)
- Gorilla Cookies

4 indica-dominant stains:
- Grape Ape
- Larry Bird (Gelato) (might have green and purple phenos)
- White Widow
- Taskenti
Cool thread.

If you're looking to get back to the main strains, why not go with:
Afghan or (Azad) Kashmir for genuine Kush - head a bit further back up the genetic chain (although most are adulterated now...)
Maybe some Malawi?


As for the descriptor, "Earthy", I think of that as a foggy morning walk through an old growth forest -- smells of soil and humus, wood & vegetal scents as the sun warms the Earth. Beautiful stuff.:weed:
I get what you're saying about Hay / Alfalfa smelling product though --- I don't like that either. I think it's mostly in the curing:

Commercial operations have deadlines:
100 pounds of product MUST be ready for sale by XX/XX date.
100 pounds of product decided that it wanted to dump it's hay scent a few days later than usual, and was cured with that scent in the jar.
-- but the scent profile on the label of that Hay Bomb jar says, "Earthy, Piney". :spew:

I chopped the first plant of this harvest a few days ago - OG Kush. The drying room still has that beautiful Kush funk going strong, but I know that the hay scent is coming - and that's good! After a little while - maybe a week - the hay scent will have off-gassed from my curing buds and that lovely Kush funk is all I'm left with as I jar them.
I grow for friends & Family - what deadline? :bigjoint:

I used to be the same, I always went for fruity sweet smelling weed now I only really like the fucking dankest dampest foul smelling shit. I think when I was a kid all the weed around here was all citrusy sweet outdoor sativa stuff or something. Now I'm being exposed to all this crazy exotic shit from plaaces where breeding has gone out of control, the best weed so far has ben the pungent earthy/dank stuff.

Agreed - IMHO dries WAY too fast - chlorophyll & the associated hay / alfalfa get locked into the aroma and it's too late to fix.
Impatient growers / buyers just want product to move off of shelves, so speed and consistency (of delivery, not flavor) is key.

In a day or two my hanging branches will be possible to smoke and get high. Some might jar them right then. It'll taste ok too; so why wait?
- Because it will smell & taste a lot like hay and I'll get a nice 2 minute coughing fit. Not good.
In a week, that hay scent will go away along with some of the harshness associated with it. Better.......
Then I jar them for a few weeks to bring that Kush FUNK to the surface. Best!

It takes longer - it just does - but IMHO the QUALITY of the product goes from "Budweiser" to "Craft Brew"

In my first year of growing (12 months this May ... so relatively early in learning techniques), I've noticed that hanging time varies by plant. An intermediate step has helped to avoid hay smell from nugs that are too wet for the jar:
1) I hang for ~7-10 days (longer than that, nugs seem to lose some of their aesthetics);
2) cut up and sort into small, medium, large buds, and spread them each out on a separate level of a mesh hanging tower for 2-3 days;
3) finally, put them in jars, but leave them partially opened for a day.
- I don't do a final, final trim until they're in jars -- it's just a time-management thing.

Higher THC strains seem to be more delicate than higher-yielding, less potent strains....

It literally smells like freshly turned soil. But not in a bad way. I haven’t come across really earthy herb in years though.

The OG Kush from Royal Queen Seeds I grew smells and tastes what I would consider earthy/dank/musty.

It is definitely different from anything else I've grown.

Grown with a mix of other strains and they all had their own different terps so it wasnt the environment.

Leaves a distinct aftertaste on the tongue.

That's cool, a stealth strain, (they could market it that way) must have very little terps.

It's insane bag appeal makes up for its lower potency for the most part. And since it is so similar looking to the colored flower that some people go crazy for, it is also victim to the name game. Pretty much guaranteed you can grow it and get rid of all of it in todays market. I'm sure there might be a potent example of it out there but mostly it falls into the category's above.

Very similar here:
Harvest / hang days - take every large leaf with a stem. Hang until it looks like it wants to be smoked (a bit crispy outside)
Final trim - I like a close trim, and save all my larf / sugar trim for hash & edibles (no waste), then jar.
Definitely saves time and simplifies everything.
The buds that felt smokeable yesterday are wet the next day.
Repeat to appx 60% rh or they taste / feel "right".

Last 2 grows I managed to get a really nice golden-toned cure - beautiful flavor!

Ok, I whittled my original 15+ strains down to 8. Now, I've divided the 8 into Side A (4) and Side B (4), sectioned off my 2 veg areas into 6 sections (not including a 2-shelf seedling/clone area): 1 section for each Side A strain, and all 4 Side B strains share 2 sections. So, friends can expect to always see all 4 Side A strains and I can keep it interesting on Side B. Also, I'll try out any new additions/RIU suggestions on Side B.

My 8 strains are below. If you see any palate gaps, I'm all ears. I feel like the indicas are in pretty good shape, so I guess I'm most in need of a standout feminized sativa-dominant photo strain.

Side A
- Taskenti (1 source)
- Gelato (Larry Bird) (2 sources) (smelliest indica-dom so far, but my first round of Taskenti finishes in 2-3 weeks)
- Gorilla Cookies (1 source)
- Grape Ape (1 source)

Side B
- Bruce Banner, Bruce Banner 2.0 (1 source of each)
- White Widow (currently, 3 sources; reducing to 2, then maybe 1)
- Animal Crackers (1 source) (smell and taste surpass Gelato but AC isn't as potent; so, in a blunt, I add AC to another strain that's more potent but less smelly/flavorful)
- 5 Alive (1 source) (this one's the most difficult to grow/clone ... and it's slow. Occasionally, I'll bloom one. I might keep 5 Alive for myself, maybe a few people; or I'll eventually replace it).

Coincidentally, the 8 are 4:4, indica-dom to sativ-dom. I've also been waiting for a few Dark Horse strains to become available again. Other than those, I'm looking forward to your suggestions and giving some of them a run!

At some point, I'll go back to page 1 and compile a list of palate gap-fillng strain suggestions, along with my 8, on whatever page this thread's on at that time ... I'll see if I can pin the list to the top, so it's easier to make/consider a suggestion.

Absolutely. Who in their right mind would find 'dirt' as a flavour profile appealing let alone desirable? And you're right on that hay aroma/flavour theory of your's. It's unanimous, hard pass on earthy over here too!
