Harvest Advice, Amber + Clear Trichomes, 63F First Grow, Please Help!!!! (pics inside)

Hey,

I flipped to 12/12 on June 8th which was 63 days ago, so 9 weeks now, I think one of my plants is very close to finished, which I'm absolutely thrilled about, I thought it would bulk up more and I hope it still does, but I'm seeing a good amount of Amber and I'm not sure if I should let it go any longer, I'm going to write all the info and put some pics down below.

  • 100% Canna Coco
  • Emerald Harvest 3 part nutrients
  • 5 Gal Fabric Pots
  • 4ft x 4ft Tent
  • 480w Quantum Board LED 3000K
  • Temps are around 22 celsius
  • RH stays between 40 - 60%, usually right around 50.
I've been feeding them twice a day with this mix of nutes:
  • 2ml/gal CalMag
  • 6ml/gal Micro
  • 3ml/gal Grow
  • 8ml/gal Bloom
They usually get a half gallon of water around an hour after lights on and then another half gallon about an hour or two before lights off, sometimes a tiny bit earlier.

The strain is GELAT.OG but I also have a couple a GG#4 plants in the same tent, but I think they have a couple weeks left on them. I don't want to harvest early as I want to make sure I maximise these plants potential as this is hopefully all I will be smoking till my next grow is done.

Here are some trich pics, as you can see there is a good amount that appear clear to me but also a lot appearing amber, this is on the top colas, the lower ones do not have much if any amber, so I'm not sure when I should harvest. The pistils have almost all browned on the top colas, except a couple colas are foxtailing (maybe) and also shooting out new pistils, I read this strain is prone to fox-tailing so hopefully it's just that rather than stress induced. Sorry for the shitty photos, it's been really difficult to get photos through the magnifier I have.

And here are some pics of the top colas that those photos came from:

IMG_3722.jpgIMG_8936.jpg

Here's a photo of another top cola, is this foxtailing (on the right side)?

IMG_3732.jpg

And here is a pic of one of the nugs just below the top of the canopy, so it is somewhat shaded, further down under the scrog net there is lots of TINY tiny nugs, I wish I had defoliated more, but that's for the second grow I suppose.

IMG_3727.jpg

Here is a pic of the whole tent, these pictures are of the plant in the front right, and the one on the front left is another GELAT.OG, but that one is slightly more immature, I'll upload pics of that today as well if people are willing to help and give their opinion.

IMG_3738.jpg

So here are my questions I suppose:
  1. Does that plant look finished?
  2. What would you recommend I do about the smaller more immature lower nugs? I was contemplating a staggered harvest if that will really boost my yield/quality.
  3. What do you think the yield will be? I'm hoping for a pound out of the tent as that will last me and the wife till the next grow is done.
Any experienced opinions would be much appreciated as I wanna do the best job possible with this! I've loved growing these plants and I can't wait to start again.

What part of the plant are those microscope shots from? Sugar leaf or the buds themselves? Sugar leaf matures faster, you want to be checking the buds themselves. They look like they could use a week or two by their outward appearance but the microscope shot looks like they are basically ready (thought one more week wouldnt hurt.) As for yield its really hard to say man, those are really leafy and I cant tell how much bud is in there but i think about a pound is a pretty accurate guess. I'm in a similar boat as you but a little different. One big grow in the winter to last the me year is the plan. Running a perpetual grow is just to much work and where I live, it gets so cold that running 1000w HPS is very easy to control temps; the light just helps heat the house.

Hey man, the pics were on the buds, it's hard to know what I'm really looking at specifically as I'm having a hard time using the loupe, but I'm 99% sure those trichs were on the calyxes at the top of cola. I had the same thought, the trichs look ready but the plant itself doesn't. Maybe I should just harvest the top colas? What would you do?

I would just wait a week. Its not like its going to go bad in a week. Unless your all about that super heady high, then cut asap.

Hey guys,

Just posting to give some more info and let you guys know how it went/how it's going. On Sunday I harvested the GELAT.OG plants, but only the developed tops, I've left the rest of the nugs there to ripen further, figured there was no time wasted anyway as the Gorilla Glue is still flowering so I couldn't start my next seeds anyway. I was pretty worried about stressing the plants too much and that they would die, but truthfully they seem healthier than they were before, and the nugs have started ripening again.

For the GG#4 it's day 72 of flower, nugs are small which is depressing as the GELAT.OG nugs were pretty small too. One of the GG plants has LOTS of amber trichs, so I need to harvest that soon (that one is also throwing nanners now), where as the other GG has no amber and all cloudy, I think I'll chop this weekend either way as that will be nearly 11 weeks flowering. I would love to chop the more developed GG sooner but I'm waiting on the GELAT.OG to dry before I chop cause I don't have any more drying area and the smell is a big concern so just doing it in the bathroom is not an option.

Right now, the drying area is a simple cardboard box attached to a wooden frame with the bendy green soft garden wire being used as a line to hang the coat hangers on. I'm planning to a dry trim for these ones, and maybe a wet trim on the GG just to see the difference, but I did remove all large fan leaves before we hung them up.

I had a couple questions about the drying phase though, how worried should I be about over-drying? My temps stay around 18-23 celsius (65 - 74 fahrenheit) and the RH is now at 52% pretty consistently but initially was closer to 45%, I thought this was too low so I turned the dehumidifier down a bit. I'm also not sure what the best method to know if they are dry is? I don't want to risk mold, but I don't want crispy crunchy buds either. I've been testing for the stems snapping and none will snap yet, but some of the buds are starting to feel crispy on the outside.

Here's a pic of the drying area - this is the first part of the harvest, basically the top half of both GELAT.OG plants.

Here's the 2 Gelat.OG's now, very happy to have exposed all of this undergrowth to direct light, sadly the GG plants are forcing me to keep the light high up.

For anyone reading in the future, I'd recommend a staggered harvest if you didn't defoliate as well as you could have, in my case I did very little defoliation which I think may have been the cause of all the small nugs as light did not penetrate very far into the canopy at all.

It's been 5 days since I chopped the top half and the plant has never shown any signs of stress and it has started ripening up again, the buds are not growing much but they are becoming a lot denser, the color is coming out, and resin is piling on like the top colas were before. I was pretty surprised at how well they handled all of this because I started slacking and missed a couple waterings after the initial harvest too.

Very excited for my next grow, I got Pheno Finder Seeds Wedding Cake S1, and Ken Estes GDP, I just hope they stay close to an even height this time

Much love

Hey guys,

... I just hope they stay close to an even height this time.
To keep the plants at an even height, you need to start training them early. I've started a new batch here:

20200815_094241.jpg

These have all been topped and FIM'd several times, using wire and pipe cleaners to tie down each of the stems as they grow. Keep these main stems growing sideways, and they will grow new stems straight up. These new main stems should all be about the same height, since they are growing off the same sideways stems.

If things go really well, they end up like this, or whatever shape works best for you:

Yeah, I used a scrog net this time which was pretty good I think, but I want to train them better next time for sure. I think defoliating will give me the biggest difference in yield, but I will find out for sure in the near future.

I'm in the process of trimming up the buds that were drying in the photo I posted before and I still have a few big branches to go but yield is already almost 4oz, and I still have most of the tent to harvest! Very happy. Will upload some bud pics later, I already smoked and tbh the taste is better than what I've been buying around here recently, and it should only be up from here with curing. Potency is also good, a strong indica body high, to be expected with the OG kush lineage I guess.

I'm worried the buds are a little too moist on the inside, so I did jar them up but I'm opening the jars 3 to 4 times a day for 20 mins at least for the next few days and if they ever get sticky I'll take them out for a couple hours. I don't have Boveda packs or any mini hygrometers right now, but early next week I'm going to go get all that, hopefully nothing gets moldy before then.

I'm also gonna start my staggered harvest of at least 1 of the Gorilla Glue plants cause some of the tops are like 50% amber and throwing nanners (I've had no space in the drying area for a few days and things got out of hand), the other isn't really showing any amber or really look like it's done, next week will be 12 weeks flowering. Will upload pics later

Whats up guys I have some pics, the GELAT.OG is dried and has been curing for 5 days now, I've been smoking since the day I trimmed (19th/20th I think). I harvested the Gorilla Glue on Friday and at first it looked like I was going to be getting way more from the GG than the GELAT.OG but the GG is drying out and becoming super airy, but it's so sticky that it feels wet and my hands are covered in oily resin after handling them, I'm sure they will be some potent smoke as they were absolutely covered in trichs.

Now, in the tent, I still have the bottom half of the GELAT.OG plants and the bottom half of the GG plants growing and ripening, I have a major nanner problem with one of the GG plants that has hermie'd hard so I'm not sure if it is really worth continuing to grow, there are at least 1 or 2 nanners on about 50% of the buds, and visible mature seeds on about 5 to 10% of the buds, do you guys think I should just chop that plant and let the other 3 finish up? The Gelat.OG plants that are finishing up have been ripening up and getting denser, but on one of them, almost all of the buds are growing small foxtails at the top, which is annoying. My plan now is to be harvesting those this weekend or early next week, whenever the Gorilla Glue is all dry and trimmed, and then the remaining Gorilla Glue plants once the (2nd) Gelat.OG harvest is dried and trimmed, which I'm guessing will be around another week. I must say I think the staggered harvest is definitely worth doing as they are definitely packing on some weight, but resin production has now stopped on most buds, this is probably cause I really slacked on watering over the weekend...

Just to show you guys the difference in yield, here is a pic of the GELAT.OG harvest I did on the 16th of August

IMG_3881.jpg

and here's a pic of the GG harvest I did on Friday (21st of August)

IMG_3957.jpg

and here is the tent today, still a decent amount of buds to harvest! Some of the GG I harvested was less mature than I would have liked but I wanted to even out the canopy so that I could lower the light as the GG's stretch really fucked me over because they were almost twice the size of the Gelat.OG plants so the light was way too far from them the whole time.

IMG_3960.jpg

and lastly, here's a pic of the bud from the Gelat.OG, curing for 5 days now, the smell has been changing, but truthfully, it's getting less intense. The smell is much less in your face but it is getting more pleasant and nuanced, but I'm still hoping the pungent dank smell will come through.

IMG_3970.jpg

My only question is do you guys think I should chop the GG plant that has hermie'd real bad? It has lots of fat buds that I'd really like to see get denser but I'm not sure if they really will, I've heard when they hermie like that that they focus on seed production instead of buds? Any thoughts?

Thanks for all the help guys, very happy to be saving some money and at the same time smoking the best weed I've ever had!
