has anyone heard of using sugar to help germination

iv got a bag of aprox 120 seeds that are minimum 18 years old that iv been trying to germinate with no luck using every method possible only having seeds Crack open a tiny bit after 6 or 7 days but then have no root emerge and the guy at my local garden store suggested using the scuffing method then soak in a cup of water with a pinch of sugar disolved with till they sink then into paper towel with the same water using this method 5 out of 7 seeds have cracked open in 24 hours going to leave another day to see if a root wants to emerge

Probably not a good idea. Fermentation. Anaerobic bacteria. Not a good idea for a seedling.

I wonder what kinda criteria it takes to vecome a hydro store employee man.............Have a hipster gauged ear lobes, a cocky attitude rife with ignorant diatribes that go nowhere, idk man just makes me smfh at some of the shit i see customers leaving this cesspools with both misinformation and shitty start-up products! That industry could use a thorough douching

so far his suggestions have helped with the germ rate on these old seeds from 0 out of 35 seeds to 5 out of 7 seeds cracking was more just asking other members if they have heard of this or if anyone knows how it would help as it obviously does and i trust the guy that gave the info known him for years and he grows himself personally seen him sprout a seed from the 80's

I've never herd of that before. I would put the seed in a cup of pro mix a quarter inch deep and cover it with plastic wrap. Keep an eye on it till you see a sprout. Safest way imo as long as you get the plastic wrap off promptly when you see signs of a sprout

Do what you want. I just don't think there's anything scientific to it. Molasses and sugar has carbs and potassium, but you don't need that for a seedling. You also have a better chance of inviting bugs and introducing bad bacteria.

I knew a guy like that once........had panama red from the 70's ....then some dude from utica NY came here with a half kilo of coke and dude sold his equipment,gear,etc to ride that train...........MERIKA!

With seeds that old I don't see why not to try a 24 hr soak with a sugar solution...me, myself would do a ...put them in the fridge for a month then try...using the cold to WAKE THERE ASS UP!!!!!! I once found some old Mex seeds that were at least 10 years old and stored under the worst conditions....30 percent sprouted and 90 percent died with in two weeks...but the ones that made it were the best there genetics had to offer...with seeds that old you got nothing to lose

is there something that happens within an older seed i keep having the seeds open up but the tap root never shows is tgere sometging stopping it

Scuffing is no biggy and many noobs and others will do it in their time

adding sugar or better fructose is new tech

I've used salic acid and aloe vera before

and above all patience ..lol
