Have I got this right? Probably not...

So Im keen to do a little of my own breeding. But not sure if I have wrapped my head around it fully. Have I got the right idea:

Take strain A (parent 1 - P1) and cross with strain B (parent 2 - P2) resulting in F1's, which are a AB hybrid. The resulting F1's would show a 1:2:1 ratio, meaning that if I grew out 4 plants, one would favour P1, two would be a 50/50 of P1 and P2, and one would favour P2...statistically anyways.

Grow out a bunch of the F1's and select the plants with the desired characteristics. Cross these two F1's, and I'll get F2's. Keep doing this through F3's, F4's etc until you have a plant with the characteristics that your after.

So now I've got, let's say an F5, and its the plant I want. But as I understand it, the more you inbreed, the plants yield, potency, vigour etc are reduced.

Do I now cross the F5 female that I want with the original male parent plant? Does this stabilize? Increase vigour? Or just ruin everything you've just done?

Anyways, Im very new to the idea of breeding. Sounds fun, but I know I've got a lot to learn. But am I on the right track?

not that easy i think.... especially if one or 2 of the parents are polyhybrid. if u use WW X AFGHANI then yes your first steps are good. I cant answer question about stabilizing the F5 but looking forward to the answer

start off with pollen chucking for fun and go from there ... 75% of what i grow now are my own strain :eyesmoke:

Cheers for the replys.

And yea, Im POSITIVE its more complicated than that. Hopefuply thats a start though.

This is ALL about fun for me. I have no intentions for anything more. Pollen chucking is certainly the first step along the road, and was my initial thought. Then was just interested in taking the next step....why not ey.

Good or bad, Ive always been a fem'd seed guy as my veg space is limited so I couldnt afford to double up the plant numbers to account for males. Ive never actually seen a male plant in RL...hermies yes, bo no straight up males. Even all the bagseds have been female. So Im upgrading my set up soon and will now have the ability to run regular seeds. Hence all this "breeding" talk. Ill be getting a bunch of regs soon, probably from Herbies. Havent nailed down the strains yet.

So would it be worth trying to get a hold of at least one landrace?

And I dont necessarily need to stabilize the strain...I mean, even if there is quite a few phenos, I can just run a bunch of seeds and look for the end result plant, and then keep it as a mother and clone clone clone.

I dunno... just trying to wrap my head around all this. But whether it turns out like I want or not doesnt reallh matter. I.really have no expectation of "breeding" the perfect plant...but I anticipate it will be interesting and fun none the less.

Thanks again...

fun and rewarding... always nice to impress ur friends with strains u created! i would recommend using one landrace mostly if u want to stabilize but if looking for special pheno to clone clone clone, 2 hybrids can surprise u BIG TIME! checkout my thread if u wanna see what i have been up to... Spacebomb was the male i used on many different females. now i am going for cbd rich so latest male is reggae seed revolutiion

hyroot, i thought f2's were

a x b = f1

f1 x f1 = f2

i sort of started stabilizing a strain this way .. i got 200 seeds

sb x medicine

and then

(sb x med) x (sb x med) = 200 seeds ... just about to start growing them out and i used my pussy smelly pheno :weed:

Thats how I learned it back in the 90's. I was taught to back cross f1 with original male and female. If you have male and female of both strains back cross those too. Back crossing originals to.get the full characteristics of both strains. So its not leaning towards one or the other. Crossing 2 f1's is not back crossing. I actually was an apprentice sort of speak on a couple gardens back in 97 -98 . prior to that I did some small out door. After working on those gardens is when I set up my first good size garden.

Ive have breed a couple ibl and a few hybrids that way. It takes a very long time.

A f1 and a f1 are not stable this is why many seed companies sell f1s because without the parents it will be real hard if not impossible to get back to that original bean. I think a f1 x f1 is doing more harm than good, I have learned the same tech as hyroot. Cross beans take seeds and cross back to parents and so on...

F1 I have all look the same , I think when you get to f2-5 is when phenotype varies.
I actually just read a long post at beginning of this sub forum, and it states from a few creditable sources that you are correct sir, a f1 x f1 is a f2, so I stand corrected. Hope your beans do you right. Cheers.

Sorry that was green santa's post about f2s. Cheers anyway tulsa.

When you cross and f1 x f1 you get several pheno types leaning towards one strain or the other. When you back cross with parent strains you get one sometimes 2 phenos. That's has full characteristics of both strains.
