Hay smell on bud

Hi guys, so it's been 5 days now since I chopped my 2 autos . They've been drying at 60/60% and for some reason the dry room and all the bud smells like pure hay . Is this normal? This is my first time so I don't know what to expect . I understand the smell should come back during curing ?

Normal for day 5. Nothing to worry about at this stage. How did they smell when you chopped them?

Yeah u got about 5 more days at least at 60/60 . You got the air moving in the drying room?

Air is moving yes. And when I chopped the plants they smelt good . Like normal when they flower . They had good aroma

How essential is a fan in the drying room ? Is it to prevent mold mainly ? I know it circulates air , but If u didn't use one and the crop dries without , it should be all good ?

I am disappointed with the smell of my most recent harvest, 2 feminized Girl Scout Cookies, almost 10 weeks in flower, they look great, fairly sticky, definitely potent, but hardly any odor. I grew Strawberry Banana last year, same thing. I'm wondering if they bred the smell out of some strains. In any case, keep drying and hope for the best!

They wont smell good again til a couple days in jars. Past day 3 or so of drying when a lot of the waters been removed they tend to lose that fresh smell.

honestly when me and my brother burly started growing all our weed didnt smell that good, we always assumed it was because we didn't know how to cure.

the truth is if your weed doesn't smell amazing right after you dry it and put it into jars it probably wont smell amazing no matter how much you cure it.

weed smells good because of terpene profiles, curing cannabis does not make your cannabis produce more terpenes.

adding UVB/UVA to your grow increases the amount of cannabinoids and terpenes that your plant produces.

I agree with this, the time when the plants has the most terps on them is just before u chop, every minute and little disruption after that terps are spewing out of the glands. These terps are volatile compounds, to slow volatilisation keep it cold, and be super gentle with the harvesting process.

too many people think curing adds terps, bro science!

Find the balance between most terps saved and most chlorophyll lost and that’s where you want to be, that smell you’re smelling is the plant off gassing the chlorophyll that’s being broken down.

If its not a ton of plants you wont really need a fan. Should be all good. I don't use a fan. I get enough air movement without one.

My plants never smell until I trim and jar them. Trichomes only emit heavy smell when handled/squeezed. My plants hanging always have a light hay odor. Up until trimming time, my plants are handled VERY gently. Now, when I go to trim jail for 30 hours in one week, my whole house smells amazing. After trim and handling, when they go into jars, the smell is a VERY strong amazing citrus/skunky aroma.

60% humidity at 60 degrees will likely takely over 2 weeks to dry before you can trim them. while its drying, it probably smells like hay, because the chlorophyll is leaving the plant. once its dried and ready to trim, the natural terps will come out

Hi guys , so still trying to understand about the hay smell. The bud smelled amazing while growing. Not its been drying for days , smells like hay. If this is chlorophyll off gassing , when does it stop ? Does the smell come back at curing

Let it continue to dry. How is the environment they are drying in? Under 70F / maintaining 55-60% humidity consistently?
I have some plants that have been hanging for 8 days, and the smell in the tent is pretty much like hay, but in about 4-5 days it should be gone. At least when I pull the plants from the tent they no longer smell that way. I agree the smell can make you think something is wrong, but that’s just us overthinking things.
I smoke in my house, so sometimes I can barely tell I have plants. When it comes time to trim, the aroma drop kicks me in the face.

Haha that's awesome . Well good to know I suppose . I'm worrying the batch is not good. But the plants got good attention growing , they are drying at 60/60% or as close to . It's been 7 days drying. Using a moisture meter waiting for the flower to hit about 12% and the stem about 13%-14% before bagging to cure

if you chopped in the window then you are golden and that smell will go away. your dry temps and humidity are almost perfect so you have a great way to finish them and honestly you may find the “cure” is almost done with a nice long steady dry. GL

you may want to lower the humidity as the plants dry, keeping them at 60% humidity is not ideal for continued drying and could possibly result in development of fuzzy white mold
