Heat problems

I had a 400W HPS lamp running 24 hours(on 4 seedlings) but the temps were getting up around ~90 degrees. So to remedy this I got some cfls and just turned off the HPS. Now the temp is 80 or less.

I was hoping I could turn it on after they get bigger, but I would still have the temp problems.

Does anyone know of a way I could get the temps down without drilling holes in walls?

Thanks for the help

Its a closet about 4*4. The temps get the highest when I close the closet at night to get some sleep.

you either need holes for exaust and intake fans or u needa leave that door open with an oscilating fan. whatever you do, you need ventilation for that grow space with any light

I'm in a 3x4 closet w/ a 400w hps and 4 cfls, at first the temps would go up into the 100's then I put two oscillating fans, one on the light blowing out and one on the base of the plants and this brought the temps down to lower 80's at highest.

Fungus - That's my main problem. I have window covered with thick drapes that lets very air in with the window open.

Leroy - Thanks a ton for the idea. I found a small fan(12x12) that is positioned right at the hot light as of now. I have it blowing out the closet for its exhaust. I checked it after a bit and my temps withh all CFL and HPS going and it is a nice 78 degrees. The thing is if I close the closet its going to heat up no doubt.

No sleep tonight, LOL

try putting a black or dark bed sheet over the open doorway, this way most of the light will be blocked but it still get some airflow

I just dont get how you people keep your grow rooms at an acceptable temp when it's in the 80-90s outside. Fans dont make things cooler than the actual temp. I need to get an air conditioner or something. Anyone got a better idea?

As for the 90 degree temps outside(which it is mostly here year round) I ducted the a/c vent in my room into my grow space. I had 2 600 hps's vented by a can fan out into the attic and the a/c running through insulated ducting into my grow space. maybe u could incorporate something like that. otherwise your going to have to vent cool air from the room into the closet via intake and exhaust fans. maybe rig some shit up on the door, and when u go to move, replace the door.

pretty much your only other option is to go with co2 enrichment. plants can and thrive under 85-95 degree temps with proper co2 enrichment via a burner or tank with a regulator. buts thats a whole nother topic,

lol yes you do need an AC... fans help to blow the heat from the light out and bring fresh, colder air in

you need a real fan. 400 cfm. And buy a new door to cut holes in if you have to. You can even make yourself a cooltube.

you're going to need fresh air getting to your plants. you'll also need to make the room light-tight (no light leaks in or out) for 12/12. and you may also have to make sure no odor escapes so there are more problems than just heat.

for the heat problems (which i have just gone through)
first - air or water cooled lights!
second - fan blowing on the lights - another fan blowing on the plants (and not just a light breeze either - so they shake)
third - an air conditioner (that's what i ended up having to use after the first two did not do the trick to my satisfaction).
