Maybe your buddy wasn't tending to his plant properly. Was it inside or outside? If it was inside, what kind of light was it getting. If it was outside, how many hours of direct sunlight per day was it getting? Was he giving it nutrients? If so, what kind?

Most Sativas don't produce buds the size of your fist nor are they rock hard. They are a bit smaller and airy. However, Sativas, at least from my experience, produce more smaller buds but great smoke. They usually grow taller and their yields are decent. I am speaking very general and there are exceptions. As a rule Sativas, my favorite plant, produce buds that are not "commercial" size nugs.

I agree with Grow Specialist, they are so many variables in the growing of Marijuana that it is hard to point to just one or two things that will change the harvest.

Genetics of any marijuana plant are real important. If you start with shit seeds, no matter what you feed them & no matter how much light they have - you are going to hit the wall. Every plant has a predetermined potential. The better breed plants - grow with repeatable results, and have tailored traits which set them apart from other plants.
.
I Love Sativa's - most people don't like growing them - cause they get tall and their buds don't fill out as fast as shorter plants (indicas). With most Sativas, you need a full extra month of growing for them to finish properly (buds filled out - to nug status).
.
Skunk # 1 is a real good compromise, it is a proven cross, with all the nice up high characteristics of Sativas with the shorter, faster traits of Indicas. Plus every seedbank carries them - they are cheap - but an excellent plant. So, if you're on a budget & want a medium sized plant with Sativa traits - get some Skunk # 1 seeds. For less than $ 30, they are a deal.
.
Hope this helps....

There are vertical growth inhibitors . . . like BushMaster.
About 40 bones and it worked for me?
GooGle it?
