As far as FFOF I have never started fresh seeds or seedlings in it myself, nor have I chosen to use it by itself solely because of the numerous issues I have heard from friends being too hot. I know its a great soil and has been a tried and true for many. I have however experienced this with some of the Roots Organics soils as they too can run a little on the hot side, however not to the extent that OF is known for. I myself, I am in the process of running a mix actually, for comparison purposes, that Is approximately 50% FFOF, 30% Peat Moss, and approximately 20% Perlite. I say approximately as these are going to be slightly off, probably a little heavier on the perlite then 20%. I also put cleaned river rock in the bottom of my pots/bags to help with drainage as well to help insure the bottom of the containers don't become compact with time. Furthermore, i mix in lime myself as to help balance the ph and reduce the concerns of issues with that. I have also recently switched to using solely tap water, which in my area contains many things that can be beneficial to the plant, but the chlorine issue is one that can be overlooked by many. Chlorine however will evaporate out of the water if left to sit before use, and since making the switch to tap water, my plants seem much happier.
As far as start to finish, I feel my mix of OF, Peat, Perlite, and little mixture of other additives would do relatively well from seed into flower, however this also is dependent in my opinion on the length of veg growth. I am a new grower myself so at this point I am doing a lot of research and first hand experimenting to see what will work best for me in my system. Everyone has there own preference, as I have heard many positives of mixing HF and OF but I have also heard numerous arguments as to why you shouldn't do this, thus why I asked for your personal reasoning based off of your experience.
You are correct, many times new growers over love their plants and try to fix minor issues by doing 10 different things. Normally this results in even worse affects to the plant, and in the surprise occurrence that your plant starts doing better, your not 100% sure what it was that fixed the problem. Yes, there may be a post here or there as well as a thread on this forum that may slow down for a while, but we all come here voluntarily. If we don't like what is offered here at RIU we can all choose to go elsewhere.
I think OP would have gotten much better results had he provided a little more information as to what his actual grow set up is. The issue I see I this site personally is that people don't read the sticky threads before posting questions like this and the real veterans decide to not answer simply because of the lack of dedication by those that are posting. The sticky threads may be long, and may contain some nonsense within them, however they are a great place to start and have many great answers if someone takes the time to read them. Again this is just my two cents on the topic.
