Help cloning - why do they do this?

Hey guys, I need to take some clones soon and flip to flower.. I tried to take some clones with the pieces I accidentally broke to see if I could do it, none rooted but they were taken at different times, and both looked about the same when I threw them out. Just wondering if you could tell what I did wrong by the picture. I watered with tap water until I saw a bit of yellowing in the top leaves, then Fed 1/4tsp of gen hydro florabloom line. This was around day 6-7 and they didnt get better from the feeding.. i think my light was probably too close, but the picture is what it looked like when I thew it out. Temps were from 70-80 and i had them in rockwool cubes, with no humidity dome. Also I used a powdered rooting hormone, and light was just a cheap cfl I had about 4-6 inches away, was my light too close? I don't need 100% success rate, but I do want to keep the strain around. Thanks guys!20171216_020035.jpg

When they don't have roots they totally rely on their leaves for water. You need a himidity dome unless you go aeroponic. That's another thread lol

You need to use a clean sharp blade to cut a 45 degree angle into the stem and place in water right after you cut or do a recut under water and leaver it submerged for a few minutes while you do your cuttings and smoke one. This will prevent air bubbles getting trapped in the stem

Also you should have cut some of those fan leaves off so it doesn't have to work so hard to stay alive while trying to make roots.

Also read this a few times so your confident when you go do your clones for your next grow man. Keep them healthy and they'll produce!

Id follow the already stated advice, and also, as you were thinking, raise the light. My clones dont even get a dedicated light, just ambient light from the passive intake on my tent.

And honestly, that looks like it still had a good chance of making it. I had one cutting that wouldnt root, i left it and eventually it did, 3 weeks total, the 11 others were into soil in less then 2. By the time it rooted it only had 1 fan leaf left, it was yellowing and it was ont of the leaves i trimmed the tips off of. I gave it a foliar feed and nursed it along. That leaf was green again in a couple days and eventually it was a big green full healthy plant that flowered outdoors this year at my buddies house. Patience is key with growing. Dont rush anything. Everything would have to be absolutely perfect to see roots in 6 or 7 days. 10-14 is more realistic.

Some strains may take up to 5/6 weeks to root but most are 2-3 wks.

Need to cut off/back a lot of those leaves as mentioned above.
