Help! First time grower.

I received a free clone at the clinic yesterday, and I want to grow it but I have no idea what I'm doing.

Last night when I got home I put it under a 100W bulb where it has been sitting for about 13 hours now (10:30 am PST on 07/21/11). It's in a small plastic cup in some fertilizer I've never seen.

I know literally nothing about how to grow a plant so all advice would be great (as in what lights to use and how many, how long do I need to let it sit before it's ready, how much watering do I need, how do I know what the different stages are/look like, etc).

if you want to get into all the details and have this be a successful grow you must be serious enough to want to learn it all. If so I will give you temporary instructions but I highly suggest you get a couple books and read whatever you can online...

Light: first thing you must know is that certain kinds of light are best for the plant because of the light spectrum they give off. Metal Halide or High Pressure Sodium lights are great for growing and you can be successful with just a 150W. Some people use Compact Fluorescents when they are on a low budget.

Water: as a small clone right now it needs to stay moist to grow new roots but that does not mean being watered everyday. let the soil dry up a bit and if you see the leaves drooping then it is time to water.

Nutrients: kinda complicated an not necessary right away but within a few weeks you will need to know all about them.

*if you are unaware, a clone is a trimming of a plant or "mother plant" so it retains all the same genetics as its mother. Since it did not grow from seed your clone has bypassed the seedling stage and is now working on vegetation or its "vegetation stage" which requires 16-24hrs of light a day or 16/8, 18/6. I'm guessing the clone has already established roots since they gave it to you an it is ready for veg. growth. Let it get about a ft. tall then you can put it into its "flowering stage" which is simply the switch from 18/6 light to 12/12 (12 hours on and 12 hours off). During flowering when the light is off no light must leak in on your plant but you will read a ll about that

When I was given the clone I personally cut a small green, branch-like thing from the mother plant (it was about 8-11 inches long) and put it into the cup which was already holding the fertilizer of sorts I'm not familiar with. I'm not sure how long it takes for roots to establish, how long?

1-2 weeks sometimes even longer, I guess it depends on the strain and method of cloning. I have been waiting patiently for my new lsd cuttings to root and it's been almost 20 days.

During these first couple weeks, how often should I be watering the plant? Also, how do you know once the clone has rooted?

sorry what are you cloning in? soil? I have found to let the soil get "almost" dry before re watering them works best (for me) and I have found that cloning in clear cups works great because you can see the roots, otherwise your flipping your cup upside down and taking it out to see if there are roots every day or two

I'm not sure, I don't think it's soil it's some sort of dirt-like substance I've never seen before. I can ask the club what it is that it's growing in but it won't be for a couple days.

thats pretty long i usually cut about 4 inches. I would say it takes a couple weeks for roots and it definitely helps to have them in a humidity dome.http://www.coasthydroponics.com/mm5/graphics/00000002/22A_Mondi-7inDome-InUse.jpg

its important to keep your growing medium moist so the roots don't dry up. also water should have a neutral pH (6.5-7)

I'm guessing its promix which is AWSOME to clone in.. If I ever taught a school on weed growing then cloning would be one of the first and most important things I would teach
