But they dont use pure ruderalis anymore. Seed companies have some breeding autoflower strains that they use to pollinate similar photos. Im sure different breeders do it differently, but for example very sativa autoflower, some hybrid in the middle and a very strong indica. Then if they for example want to make an auto version of a sativa photo, they use the sativa breeding auto for it. So its not like they are inducing pure ruderalis genes anymore. Some older autoflower strains will be closer to ruderalis than the new ones you listed.

I grew one LSD auto from fastbuds and it had a very similar smell to zkittlez, so similar that im pretty sure that fastbuds used some zkittlez derived breeding auto with it. Zkittlez would make a great candidate for hybrid breeding because of its great terpene profile and decent THC %. I wouldnt wonder if they used the same breeding auto for large part of their strains.
You see I didn't know that, thank you. Yeah it would make sense for them to have one strong breeding auto as you say; if it's stable enough I would've done the same. But then now that you say this then what I said about the photo versions genes getting lost in the crossing is even more pronounced. If there's 2 or more strains involved in the crossing there's more of a chance for the gene pool to reorganize differently than that of the photo version.

you should be able to.... mhmm
I didn't vote since I've never grown any of those. Maybe you have it set so you have to vote first, I don't know. I don't like to give advice about things I don't know about, but like learning from others. I don't grow auto's but I'm still curious.

This is how they usually do it:

I dont remember from what company that was. Some might breed only once to original and select a bit more, some might use larger pool of plants to select from, some might even do more than one backvcross to original. Some of those old cookies from fastbuds and some others have been bred more to originals since they were first released. And also now that i think of it, fastbuds has had a cookie auto for quite a while, so their new cookie mixes might be more cookie like than maybe some others. Only speculation, and theres other important factors also.

But then you have mephisto for example that does not try to copy photos that much, but do their own thing breeding with autos and sometimes inducing new photos, but for purposes of breeding better new auto strains, not in trying to make auto version of a photo. I think this is one reason why they breed so high quality autos, they are not bred with #1 aim to be close to some specific photo, but to be best possible autoflowers. Im not saying that other breeders could not make some strains as good as mephisto, but mephisto is definitely up there with consistent high quality auto genetics.

Fastbuds is also ofc a dedicated auto breeding company, but they focus in trying to make auto version of photos like most others who breed autos

That is so interesting and a great find; it easily explains how (at least this company) they do their breeding for autos. It's certainly more of a complex process than I thought. At least with this model, it shows they dedicate the time to have the proper genetic pool end result. I'm currently reading Marijuana Botany by Robert Connell Clarke but would you recommend any literature on genetics and breeding in specific?

Also, do you imagine if Fast Buds would take the same route as mephisto and just start doing their own new strains and just focus on creating better autos instead of better auto version of a photo? They could take over the game; they have the potential and the size to do it. I wonder if that's their end game and they're in a base building phase to then venture out and try something new? it'll interesting to see for sure.

I voted for Gorilla Cookies from Fastbuds. I've grown both strains from FB (GSC and GG) and like them a lot.

My own personal vote right now would be for Purple Rolex V2 auto. Roc Bud Inc is the breeder. Very good smelling, smooth as hell.

All of them were just weak smelling/tasting phenotypes, and one went to day 103...on top of that found they was all weak didn’t get you that high.
Damn, sorry to hear that, specially since there's a lot of positive feedback from fast buds around, but I guess this sort of thing happens, even with them.

You gotta remember too that all this is relatively new and in the face of constant legal obstacles and restraints; the logistics of doing this at the moment are very difficult. If/when the industry has the chance to really thrive and have the capabilities to do all this stuff in a well funded lab, with millions of dollars in funds, then you'll see actual stable genetics IMO. These guys are doing all this with one hand tied behind their back and holding their cash in the other because banks won't deal with them. Although, on the other hand, if these guys keep at it and cannabis becomes legalized on federal level, they stand to make a killing and blow up over night into a billion dollar company and pioneers in the industry; along with all the other not so known breeders out there. I talked to a rep of a us seed bank the other day about it; she told me she has a waiting list of about 500 customers waiting for just one certain strain to be back in stock. Imagine how the demand will be once this show goes nation wide? With demand comes investment and with investment comes competition and with competition comes innovation. It'll be interesting to see who comes out on top and who sells out and who stays true to the genetics.

You should nominate that strain here ;-) I got that thread going to make a top 100 list of the most nominated strains from the growers here on RIU. You can nominate any strains you've either grown or smoked and knew who grew it. The top 100 most nominated make it on the list...I'm in quarantine...don't judge me lol

Wewll fastbuds does have some strains that seem purely their own creations. Like purple lemonade. But its also a cross between a photo and some of their breeding autos. It could be that they tried to make some auto version of a photo, but saw that there were new types of plants that were good enough to market as is. Who knows. I just meant that the general mentality of fastbuds is more focused on making "auto versions" of photos, like most others.

And its not like mephisto would not also mix photos with their strains at times, that ofc is needed to make them faster better, but where i think is more of a real difference is how its done. Mephisto can mix their autoflowers to each others and breed new strains like this with much better efficiency, because they dont need to think like "is this breeding auto going to match with that photo?", but they can just pick the best they have and give it a completely new name. And basically do the breeding with same mentality than with what people breed photos with. Except that they make autos and occasionally induce new photo genes in. Hard to say what results fastbuds would get if they copied the model of mephisto.

I dont know anything abut books, sorry.
