Help me with cloning

For whatever reason I struggle with cloning.

I have read a bunch of books and seen videos on u-tube over and over and for whatever reason my little girls don't have a high survival rate.

My challenge starts with determining how to clone (Ie where on the plant is the perfect branch).

From there I put them in rockwool 1 inch cubes and in a week they seem to yellow or get root rot. Each one seems to have something wrong with it and doesn't make it.

Any insight would be helpful. Perhaps I move away from rockwool? Any tips on the ideal 1,2,3,4 for going from mother to little girl after cloning?

I plan to go from 1 inch rockwool into a 4 inch and then into a drip or drain and flood system.

Insight is appreciated.

I cloned for the first time a coulpe of weeks ago, and i got 100% of plants to clone.... i did not use a rockwool and made my own mist system using the do it your self right here on RIU...Cost about $30 to put together was easy to put together and worked great... Are you using a root agent? Are you cutting the leaves to about half? This will help greatly with the leaves yellowing. Are you choosing branches that are atleast 3 inches long and come from the bottom of the plant? Are you soaking plants in tap water for 30 minutes before putting into system, the clorine helps disinfect them. Are you keeping the temps in check? What is your water phed to? I dont know much about the rockwool method.........

do the roots need a dry period so they dont rot i had the same problem and did everything you just said perfect but i put a lot of water in the bottom trying to raise humidity... is this what caused no root to grow and turn brown and mushy?

your problem is that you are making it to complicated.

Take a branch with good growth with more than three nodes. cut it closer to the stem.

then take all your cuttings. just grab a cup full of water. i use plastic leftover cups from work. then make your final cut at a 45 towards bottom of stem and immediately dip in water to reduce chance of air bubble in stem.

i sepparate cups by strain and label. everyone likes to think they are improving there odds by building all this stuff like bubble cloners. although i use a bubble cloner as well when i really want a lot of clones, they are not necessary for high odds of success. they all require attention of cleaning water every couple days. thats really all you need. dip in some rooting compound immediately prior to putting in water if ya want. I think the water temp is more important for faster rooting.

if you start to get some root rot or grey'n stems just keep cutting them down. change the water. cut a third more than you need and save only the strongest. no sense baby'n a long a loser and wastin all that time for a poor performer to keep it alive if ya know what i mean.

lol i am high and drunk right now lol...

With the system i built i followed directions and put mister on a timer... it was dry for 2 hours then would mist for 30 minute and i has a thermoeter and heater in there to keep the water at 78 i think it was, within 4 day i had roots.... but yea that could have been your problem...

What is this RIU you speak of. My goal, after I learn how to clone successfully is to automate my babysitting of the clones in the chamber using a mist based system on a timer. I would love to know more aobut yours.

No, my method varies from that. I take them from the top of the plant where they look healthier. Maybe my mothers aren't good. They just keep growing and growing, are they supposed to stop? I tried to maximize their growth by keeping them in a 2-gallon container.

I use RO water for everything and don't soak the plants. I go from cut to rooting gel to rockwool.

Thank you for this explanation. I got lost half way through.

1. I cut from stem
2. I place in water (maybe with rooting gel)
3. I have more than one in water
4. I cut them at 45 degrees (all together???) a second cut???
5. Then I put them in rockwool???? (this is where you lose me)

can you reconnect me here please....

I want to build my own cloner too. with the succes rate i have been reading about it interests be but are kinda expensive lol SO to you OR ANYONE ELSE can someone PLEASE describe (detailed step-by-step) guide to building your own ez cloner/daisy cloner/ mister W.E. currently brings success to you. PICS would be usefull but not a need. i think if im not too high i dont need them lol thank you everyone for all the help PEACE toke one bongsmilie

lol.... First of RIU is just the abbreviation of Roll it up.... there is a Do- It- Yourself link.... here it is https://www.rollitup.org/do-yourself/ on there are many step by step tutorial on how to make all kinds of things!!! I look over 2-3 aero cloner ideas and made one myself... i would have done my own tutoial but my usb got chewed up by my dogs.... but they are all very easy to follow and very informative also FAQs has some pointers and tutorial on building a cloner to, i just find the Do it yourself ones to be more helpful with the pictures and all..... let me know it this helps and PM me anytime!!!! i am not on that much but i do check almost daily.... with no work and it being summer and all i mostly get high work out and watch movies and UFC...lol!!!!

k man. there's no tricks to cloning. there are advantages to different systems to promote root growth etc but the basics no matter what are pretty consistent. choosing the best candidate nodes are important to your success rate. choose a branch thats about 6" or so long. It should have plenty of leaves (3+). Cut as many as you'd like. never cut more than 2/3 of a plant. they don't immediatley need to go in the water yet. I cut all my clones at one time and grab em in a handful and then take to counter where i prepare them. clean razor blade or pair of scissors. rooting compound if you use, but most importantly, the container of H2O very close by. i cut the bottom leaves and growth off. basically most things that are submerged 100% of the time i cut off. you should still have your leaves so your picking br5anches knowing that your going to be ditching some of the leaves and still have what you need. next i lightly scrape the lower stem. this is not required. now i'm ready to cut the 45 degree and submerge in something asap.

thats it man, thats all you need. thats cloning and it works the majority of the time. anything past here is personal preference and belief that it improves the survival rate. i have found that if you do the above, you will have a very high success rate. occasionally you'll lose one but heyi figure what the hell, if your doing it right your going to lose a third cuz your going to cut a lot and sELECT your healthiest growers and toss the rest a 12-13 days l8r anyway. so yeah, don't over complicate it.

if your going to be taking a lot of clones regularly i would just build your own bubble cloner as they are cheap and reliable and easy to build and maintain.

shallow tupperware container, a couple airstones, 30 gal dual air pump and your good to go. just drill like 30 or so holes in top and remove clones before roots start tanglin.

cheers

10 keys to cloning with rockwool step by step dbo on the spot style. if you don't get this stuff people can explain it easily

1)presoak and prepare - ph 5.2-5.5 for rockwool, plain water or 1/4 str flowering nutrients

2)proper cutting - at least one node inserted entirely, cutting under water is better, running water is best.

3)apply hormone - ba bam bam, follow the directions

4)insert - remember back in 4th grade...

5)keep humid - humidity dome over propogation tray, spray dome if you must but don't spray cuttings

6)keep warm - seedling heat mat under propogation tray

7)minimal light - don't use your 1,000w on 10 clones, use a small cool fluorescent or cfl, its all they need

8)don't overwater - follow directions around, keep rockwool pretty moist, but not soaking

9)let dry - letting the medium dry out completely isn't a bad thing, plants root on a mission to acquire all the water
they can

10)take your cuttings from a healthy mother - she should be in veg, and producing lots of new growth at a good rate. this will ensure that you don't waste time revegging.

I'm in love with this idea and going to do it when I get a chance... I even got an extra air pump.
