Help me with my grow box smell/fan problem!

Ok, have the "little woody" grow box (2x2x4 approx). Made a cfilter but it didn't help with the smell AT ALL.

Realized that the PC exhaust fan just isn't creating enuf negative pressure to push the smell through the filter, and it was just leaking out everywhere. I also realized that ona and other products like that were NOT SUFFICIENT for "skunky" smell control.

So my question is, how do i best deal with this? Do i just have to buy a better fan, somehow cut another whole in the box and attach the filter to that?

Need help and ideas here! Keep in mind I am "carpentry" challenged, which is why I bought this box online and didn't make my own.

Also, don't have a lot of space to work with.

HELP! THANKS!!!

if you claim ona gel won't work for you (which it probably would) you will have to get a better fan or you might have get rid of your plants if they can't smell.

You're right, that pc fan isn't going to push air through a decent filter. What you want is a good 4" centrifugal fan. Take the pc fan out. Hook a duct to the fan outlet of pc case, to the inline fan, then blow through the carbon filter. Most smell will be eliminated, might want to supplement with ONA.

What this guy said^^. Centrifugal fans are the way to go. Also, a bought carbon filter works much better than most DIY versions. You can find fan/filter packages for fairly cheap, and the extra airflow will pay you back in bud easily. Plus, virtually 100% smell free when used properly.

I would have to disagree... those fans are good for using in ducting with moving air, but they get REALLY bogged down if you try to attach a carbon filter. I use one of those 6" models to boost some AC to my room, and it barely gets the job done with air helping it along. I cant imagine how bad it would perform with air working against it.

You NEED a centrifugal fan. Something like this combo: http://cgi.ebay.com/4-INLINE-FAN-CARBON-FILTER-COMBO-ODOR-CONTROL-SCRUBBER-/180534928637?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a08b864fd

Thanks guys-

So, take out the PC fan, put ducting into the hole, attach a cent. fan to that, THEN attach the filter?

Like i said, i got the plan, but am pretty bad at "do it yourself" type of stuff. Hopefully I can get this done!

You need a good 4" inline and activated carbon. Next time go for some less stinky stuff like Northern Lights or Blue Mistic. Oh, and Febreeze the room the box is in everyday don't underestimate the power of Febreeze, it does really work. I have a stand alone carbon filter/ozonator and febreeze daily my buddy was telling me Febreeze would never work but when he came over for dinner he couldn't believe it, no smell at all.

Yeah, basically you want the fan sucking air out of the case, and blowing it out the filter. You can hook the fan straight to the filter if you want - On mine I had to use a little 1 1/2" length of metal duct to get them to fit together, because the fan outlet and filter inlet were the same size. Also, some of the filters they sell come with separate collars you have to attach yourself, if you can get your hands on one of those it would make it easier to hook the duct to the case. At home improvement stores you might be able to find a 4" collar, but then you would have to cut a 4" hole in the case to hook it up.

I'm not saying these are good sources, just including so you can see a pic of what I'm talking about-

Filter Flange - http://www.atlantishydroponics.com/Carbon-Filters-and-Air-Purification/Can-Filter-4-Can-Filter-Flange.asp?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=comparsionshopping&aff=5108

Sheet metal collar - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260394232068&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=WXF?&GUID=a62b3e271240a075fb62faa2ffe7fed4&itemid=260394232068&ff4=263602_263622
The ones at Home Depot look a little different than that, and I guess you wouldn't have to cut a hole, you could just bend all the tabs out, and attach that way.

Thanks again for all your help guys. BTW, i just won a 4" fan/filter combo off ebay for $108, not too bad I guess. Also I know how to attach the fan to the filter, will probably use flex duct with clamps for that.

My question is more, how should I put this new 4" fan in the square hole that the CPU fan is currently in?

I guess that is now my biggest question now at this point. Like i stated earlier, unfortunately, I am not the "handiest" man in the world!

Spark- thanks again for all your help, you are the man!

Ok, not looking at the hole, but I am pretty sure it is 4x4 inches, MAYBE 5x5 inches at the MOST.

my bad: After looking tonight, the fan is square (of course) on the inside, but the hole on the outside is actually round (a circle). Circumference is probably still 4 inches.

So, knowing this, what is the best way to attach the fan to this???

THANKS!!!

Ok, so I have figured out the ducting and all that. Got the stuff.

HOWEVER, I HAVE A NEW PROBLEM!

I might be getting rid of the smell problem, BUT NOW HAVE A SOUND PROBLEM!!!!

Holy Jeebus, THAT FAN IS LOUD!!!!! People might not smell anything now, but when they hear a loud ass fan coming from underneath the house, it sorts does the same "attracting attention" sort of thing!!

No sure what kind of fan you have, but have a centrifugal fan and use a speed controller to keep things manageable.

Sorry about the lack of responses, I was out backpacking since the 28th.
