I need to start surfing again, looking to move to Cali in the next couple months. I would like to live in the Cheapest town/area possible but it also needs to be big enough that I can find work(bartender) and also no more than a 45 minute drive to catch some waves. Any advice is greatly appreciated and +rep for any helpful answers.

I am a grower as well, I have been reading about the different counties in CA, had no idea the laws could be so different from area to area.

Santa Cruz definitely. Head down there every other weekend.

San Jose is also a good bet.

He said cheap.....

Check out Escondido. Also oceanside would put you right near the beach and still be pretty cheap...but i dont know about growing in oceanside. San diego county is pretty lax from what I understand when its comes to prop 215.

NorCal or SoCal?

Northern Bay Area California: Live anywhere where B.A.R.T. is!!(bay area rapid transit) train is.
EastBay
San Leandro, Oakland (lake Merritt area)Piedmont, Berkley,Emeryville, Pinole, Hayward. Fremont. Suburb:Pleasanton, Dublin, Castro Valley livermore(middle class young) Contra Costa : Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill. Moraga

South Bay- Gilroy,San Jose...sketch..avoid the eastside
Santa Cruz is beatiful and expensive. Dangerous commute thru the moutain (hwy17) to SanJose.

North Bay....Marin.

Socal: Glendora, Riverside long beach, "North Hollywood" lol seedy and much like SFO. Ontario,Anahiem, Filmore(by Ventura). Anywhere in the I.E.(Inland Empire) San Diego, Oceanside.

Those are some for starters.

With the need to surf being a big requirement I would have to agree with Huntington beach. For So cal anyway. I don't know nor cal that well so I can't offer advice. But in So Cal HB would put you central to good spots, including the Wedge, Trestles, HB itself, and the rest of the O.C. and L.A. beaches. Just drive up and down PCH.

HB is a pretty laid back town. If you're white, and not a punk kid the cops are especially nice. :D Seriously though, I lived there for a while and it's a cool town. On of the better beach towns in So Cal that isn't billionaires only.

As for growing it doesn't matter because no one is ever going to know that you grow, and you're going to cover the smell and sound, right? RIGHT?

Ventura is what you're describing

If your looking for cheap in SoCal next to a beach its going to be impossible.
Unless you want a 1 bedroom jail cell. I mean apartment. Some place around oceanside would probably be your best bet.
You have oceanside beach, Carlsbad, and Encinitas all within 5-10 miles of eachother. Pretty decent swells at times
Not as expensive as Huntington or Newport.
Encinitas is an awesome beach with a good night life

Anywhere in the inland empire? San berdo/Colton/mentone area is violent. Glendora, Arcadia or San marino are decent cities in SGV.

San Marino? Yeah if you make 10 million a year and love having some serious assholes as your local PD. (I lived one town over in Pasadena for 10 years)

Every place has bad areas, even Pasadena (northwest pas). In the end you have to come out and check places out.

Yeah Berdoo is violent.. why?? Idk...but yeah not all I.E. is cool.
Rancho Cucamonga and Riverside are so so as well.

In Rancho go up above Banyon into the hills in the Alta Loma area... some really nice and expensive houses. In San berdoo county Rancho is actually the best place to be. Lowest crime rate, most stable housing prices, etc.

If you like SoCal. Orange County is great. You can find rooms for rent pretty cheap. I rented a room in Costa Mesa right next to OCC (Fairview+Adams) and it was like 300 bucks a month. You can go inland a little if you can't find something for a really good price, but the HB,NB,Costa Mesa, Irvine area is just fucking awesome.
