Help Poppy Seedling Keeps On Dying

hi first time grower here and had been kiling my seedling..

I need your advice please

first im in a tropical country, average annual temp is 26C - 33C all year long, just sun and rain.

tried germinating them in pots, sprouted (2-3 days) successfully but never reach the stage of showing their true leaf.. their growth becomes stunted when they are 1.5 inch tall., then they curl down and die.

can you please guide me on what to do and how to do it (indoor or outdoor) considering my location and sittuation.. ( Temperature, pot, lights, germination and etc..)

I really hope I can raise it like you did,i dont mind having small pods, I just want them in my herbal collection

thanks in advance!!:hump:::hump:

Well, first of all, poppies are a cool weather plant, so your climate may be the first hurdle for you.

Second, I don't know how you are growing them, but they need a very loose and sandy well drained soil.

Poppies do not like a lot of water, so if you're keeping the soil damp, that could be another problem.

Poppies also do not transplant well at all, their roots run very shallow and just about any disturbance to them is bad.

Here's link with more detailed info, good luck.

hi lil Czr, yeah i've read about poppies prefering cool weather and all.. thats why im interested if someone here have succesfully grown indoors with a room temp of 77 - 80F..

planted them in 1 - 2 liter pots, other are in .5 liter, just an experiment if i can grow them in my location, supprisngly the

loose soil and with a 60w cfl bulb 16/12 (or if it is not raining i put them outside to get sun..), and yes i am aware of the damping issue..

do you think its not possible to grow in a tropical country? even if it is in a semi controlled growing environment (as far as room temperature is concerned,)
sunlight is not a problem though in my place coz all year round we can experience it intermittently, at least..

as for the room temperature I can only sustain 77F through April - September period, coz electric bill would be a big issue for me,

anyways if anybody here have come up a system or procedure to make poppy grow in equator countries please help me

thanks again lil Czr

I have grown them indoors and it can be done but you have 3 things working against you that are just about impossible to overcome.

First - is the sheer numbers that you have to grow to harvest enough opium to make it worth the effort.

It's just about impossible to grow that many poppies indoors, as it takes several poppy heads to get one person high.

Second - is that poppies grown under even the best HID lighting are much smaller than the poppies grown under the sun.

And that further decreases your harvest.

Thirdly - it's almost impossible to transplant poppies as their roots are very delicate and run very shallow.

They can tolerate very little damage, and most die soon after transplant.

So in short, poppies are very easy to grow provided you have the right environment, otherwise it's almost impossible.

Where you live it would be best for you to plant a mass amount of seeds outdoors and see what happens.

If some survive, then the next generation of poppies will be slightly more acclimated to your zone.

And after several years, you might have developed a strain of poppies that thrive where you live.

Good luck.

you're right about mass planting, however i dont have that many seeds..

I dont really care about the yield, im more interested if I can grow them here, indoors or outdoors, I'll be happy even if their pods look like marbles lol,

just incase you know any information that will be able to help my goal please let me know

thanks again lil czr!

Yeah, if you get them to survive, the pods are loaded with seeds so you would be good there.

The rule for growing poppies other than the correct climate is "less is more".

Other than that, I think I've told you most of what there is to growing poppies.

Let me know if you have any other Q's.
