Ok, so a friend started his 2nd grow about a week ago and hes havin a little trouble. He dropped two seeds into soil last week after a successful germ. and they both sprouted soon after. The problem arose a few days ago when both plants started turning yellow. He thinks its prolly just heat stress from his lights being to close but hes not too sure and neither am I as i have no real grow experience yet. Thanks for any help.

Are you feeding the plants any nutrients? If so, stop, don't feed your babies any nutes until at least two weeks after they're born. If this is the problem flush the soil and they should perk up. Depending on the type of lights they should be o.k. fairly close to the plants, but is there any ventilation to help get rid of heat from them? If not, you need it.

I even go about 3 weeks without nutes. (I actually made this mistake when I first started.) If your friend is using a high wattage lighting system he needs to make sure he can't feel any heat on the back of his hand when he puts it over the tender seedlings. Proper air circulation is also key as stated in the last post.

(Might I suggest spending about $30 and getting Jorge Cervantes' latest grow bible.....it will help you out a lot....and it is worth it's weight in gold.)

No, He's not adding any nutes and i don't think are any in the soil cup things he's using. He's using cfls and has a fan blowing right on the lights and the seedlings. Thanks for the reply.

Okay then it sounds like it could be a hard water problem causing salt build up maybe?.....Go to the local grocery store and buy some water from those gallon vending machines. The water goes through like 6 cleaning processes...so you know it is good stuff. Use that to flush the little ones. If you could post pics it would probably help people diagnose what is going on.

Are there drainage holes in bottom of the "cup things"?

The fan blowing directly on the seedlings might not be the best thing....
...this can wind burn them and cause them to suffer stress at a young age resulting in longer grow time with less yield. It should be oscillating and not blowing too hard or too close, a few feet away should be good Cfl's don't create much heat, so the fan does not have to be on full blast or close to the seedlings....

The cups he's using are made entirely of soil. The kind of thing you can just drop right into your next pot. He tells me they are getting plenty of water. The fan that is on them is about a foot and a half away and isn't oscillating. Ill try and talk to him tonight to see how they're doing and let him know about the fan possibly doing a little harm. Thanks everyone again. Also, I'm starting my first grow tomorrow after my bean germs. Doing just one Barney's Blue Cheese Fem. in a cfl closet grow box. I plan on LSTing it to get the most from my cfls and was wondering if i should do a journal through the entire grow, or just the flowering. Thought it might me interesting to see an lst grow, at least im having trouble finding an actual journal showing it going through veg. Please post some opinions and thanks again.
