I'm not exactly a noob having grown successfully a couple times in the past but it has been several years.
I started with 4 sprouts (paper towel method) but one is dead so now have 3 left. I transplanted each to a small 6 oz plastic cup with 4 slits in the bottom for drainage. 50/50 perlite/vermiculite. Been feeding only distilled water (ph between 6-7). They are under 24 hour 400MH (initially under some small CFLs). Temp has been mid 70's to low 80's. Humidity is concerning at low 30's percent so I've been misting them once or twice a day. I have the cups in a small sandwich tupperware as a reserve, which I fill maybe a 1/2" once a day (allow it to wick up through the slits). I guess the humidity is so dry that the water evaporates within 4-5 hours. The cups feel heavier than a dry mix cup so I think the soiless mixture is retaining moisture even though when I stick a finger in it, it feels only slightly moist. I have one of those cheap soil moisture meters that has been reading on the very dry end of the scale (I don't know how accurate those things are and it is 10 years old).
They have a couple nodes (sets of leaves past the initial round ones) but the plants are not more than 1/2" tall after 12 days and take up less horizontal area than a nickel. The leaves are tiny. Some of leaves are browning on the very tip but otherwise look ok. They are not drooping as if under watered. Growth just seems very very slow. Now I've gradually moved them closer to the light source so hoping this makes a difference. They spent 1 week on CFL, then a couple days at 2.5' from light and now about 1' from the light since 2 days ago.
I'll post pics when I get a chance, but any idea what I could be doing wrong? I seem to recall doing this several years ago that they grew much faster. I'm concerned I could be over-watering but the medium just seems so dry.
Can I use a rooting hormone at this stage? What can be done cheaply to counteract a 30% humdity?
Thanks for any help!!!
