yes idd userfriendly, thanks a lot. i was in the same boat as kulan hunter and was going for the hps conversion bulb. after reading this thread, i'm forgetting about that and going with the HPS bulb for flowering. may buy a 125 2700k later to aid the flowering but its not essential. quality of quantity anyday imo. cheers

User Friendly, whats your opinion on alternating between hps and mh during flowering? Does the plants slow down to adjust to the new light or should it be ok with something like;

Week 1-2: MH
Week 3: HPS
Week 4: MH
Week 5: HPS
Week 6: MH

And so on, and on...

What do you reckon?

Wow this is the first time I am hearing to flower with the MH! I use CFL's but have done a lot of reading on the subject of more powerful lights. Interesting.

You guys dug up this old thread!?!

eachnewhour - I've never done anything like that. I have done a side-by-side HPS/MH, and the nugs flowered under MH were, in my opinion, the superior nugs. Not that the HPS nugs were chopped liver. ;-) If it's a balanced spectrum that you are after (we all are/should be), ceramic metal halides are where it's at. As soon as they start making these in big-boy wattages, I'll move on to them. Phlips MasterColor Ceramic Metal Halide ~ CMH ~ HPS-Retro White

Here's a pic of a girl flowering under a MH.

Those are some thick ass stigmas! how far along is she? i've only read and been told that the softer blue MH was only good for clones and youngin's in veggie because it resembles the spring to early summer sun (similar spectrum?),, when a plant would be in veggie,, and the harsher orange of HPS resembling the late summer to fall sun,, when a plant would be flowering.
I'm not sure if this is based totally on theory or if it's based on trial. I would like to see some statistical analysis if anyone is interested.
Here is a prominent cannabis magazine in Canada where it has a whole article on different types of lighting.
More lumens please

nice userfriendly, some really frosty buds you have there. i look forward to seeing my finished product now.

a lot of controversy about the CMH bulbs, some saying not suitable for growing. i dont understand how that can be seeing as it emits pretty much a full spectrum much like the sun. and apparently you can actually touch this bulb unlike MH/HPS (at the end anyway where it is the coolest). i think CMH lamps only run on HPS ballasts so i think i will have to give it a miss for the near future.

Buds too close to the light tend to express nothing beyond the lower lemon/lime aromas of the fruity spectrum. Sometimes the aroma is no better than a strong chemical/astringent odor and flavor, especially those under High Pressure Sodium light systems. The finer berry flavors tend to favor more distance from the bulb, and will manifest more strongly under High Ultraviolet Metal Halide light systems, especially during the latter stages of flowering.

Breeding tips

chuckbane - That girl is 5 weeks in. I do have the light kind of high (about 4.5 ft above); I hope to chop at 9 weeks.
