Help with lamp

Hi guys, was wondering if anyone can help me.

I have a 250w ballast and was wondering if I could use a 600w bulb in it as it is the only bulb I have to hand at present. Would there be any downside as I know the bulb will be running under powered but that is better than over powering ?

Ballast is not big enough to fire up a 600W bulb .
You can get a 250W bulb from Lowes or Home Depot cheap .

Thank you was just curious but you are right I will go get one just to be on safe side
