Help with what Kelp???

Just filled my brain for the day with kelp info. Now I have no idea what to get.


The best that I can find, imho, is 'earth kelp' from progress earth. It contains Ascophyllum Nodosum and Ecklonia maxima. It is cold pressed, so no heat nute loss.


Anyone used this before?
What is your brand of kelp?

1/2 Cup of Kelp Meal per 5 gallons brewed for 72 hours then diluted 3:1. Wish I could find the link, but I found a university study that coincided with LD's belief that kelp concentrates were far inferior to a tea..

I like Cytoplus and Technaflora's Soluble Seaweed the best, but even something like liquid karma would do any regimen good and more readily available...

down to earth will be another cheap option and good bang for your buck.

Is that 3/4c per Gallon? or total? or what? Metric Measurements here. Sin, why the month wait? I have heard good about the Aglamin though.
Trich, I'm really just interested in kelp meals. Kelp seem to be the healthier option for the ladies. And the more processed something is, the less it is. Seaweed or kelp made into liquid by heat, or more often chemicals, isn't complete anymore. Not worried about cheap, I want top quality...My friends and I are gonna be smoking most of this.

If you're ammending with kelp meal it should be double everything (Ex. 4 cups all other ammendments - 8 cups kelp meal). Algamin is just a brand of kelp meal from Maxicrop distributors, I use it just fine. The month is to allow the microorganisms in your soil time to decompose all of your ammendments, the longer the wait the better.

I went with 3/4c total GE, but only because I started with Fox Farm Ocean Forest which is already packed.
The ladies def. like it and I don't think it burns easily at all. I plan to apply is as a top dressing for the first time on Monday, with a Banana tea to get a K boost to the herd in the soil.

I've always been under the impression that you wanna add about 3/4c in total(of all amendments combined) to the bigger bags(11.5g) of soil you can pick up from the stores..If you pot into the soil mix to early it will literally roast your plants roots. Temps heat up during the decomposition of everything, which is why the say you're "cookin" your soil.

if you're looking for just kelp, whichever brand you choose make sure it is 100% cold press kelp. Vital Kelp or Grow Biotic soluble seaweed are a few cold press brands. If you're using synthetic nutrients I wouldn't even bother using Kelp.. Maybe in veg, but the synthetic nutrients wipe out all microbiology that the kelp is trying to develop.
You either go organic or veganic OR you go synthetic.! My 2 cents anyway.

Right on, so when I build my soils, I use about 2-3 cups of ammendment per cubic foot. Now that doesn't mean each ammendment, instead I combine them all in a bowl, so for example; I use alfalfa, kelp, crab meal, and some all purpose dry fertilzer. I have 2 cubic ft. of soil, so I need 6 cups of ammendment and for the sake of future mixing I'll make a big batch: 4 cups alfalfa - 4 cups crab - 4 cups dry fert - 8 cups Kelp. Now from this big bowl of ammendment, I take 6 cups and add that to my soil. Though if you know you need a bit more of something, obviously change appropriately but keep kelp roughly double.

To the OP: Algamin is excellent, but many times severely overpriced. Should be no more than $15/5lb bag. Check out kelp4less.com or on ebay. Good stuff, good prices and free shipping.

Well my stoner science says that for proper mineralization a large amount of kelp is needed...unless you propose everyone wait for their rock dust to decompose, LOL. What, are they gonna burn with kelp, lol. No need for such hostility man.

I also don't quite think you understand when I refer to double and the process with which the ammendments are mixed. For my 16 cu.ft. soil mix I use 12 cups. If I can clarify in anyway let me know, but please don't get all bitchy before you ask whats up, turns out you were wrong huh.

For an example of remineralization, only 200lbs/acre is all that's needed with kelp meal.

If you've ever applied stuff by the acre you would see just how small of an amount that is.

I got bitchy because over the last few years kelp meal (in recipes) has gone from 1/2cup/cf to 1cup/cf, to 2 or more. This (the 2 cups+) was touted by several who upon close questioning revealed they had never either made an organic soil, or only did it once. But were spouting off like they had done it for years.

Your mix looks good, but you are WAY over paying. Around here:
4cf of peat moss (30 gal +-) $9.00
4cf perlite $19.00
40lb bag of dolomite $4.00
Alfalfa meal $15.00/50lb bag
granite dust $5.00/5 gal bucket ~70lbs+-
EWC mostly free, I have 2 bins, 3 years old
biochar comes from the bottom of the lump charcoal I use in my smoker. Sometimes called cowboy charcoal. $5-$7/bag. Call it biochar and the price jumps, but there is no real world difference.
The fish meal, crab meal and the like is good stuff, but since I can't source it locally I don't bother. There are other things that work just as well at a fraction of the cost.

Can't disagree with ya, far too much misleading or straight up wrong information out there, especially in organics. I am most certainly overpaying for alot of things, especially my humus, my bins arent ready quite yet so I've been resigned to bagged stuff, quality stuff but they crack my head for it. I'm pretty much stuck with going through grow stores to source my ammendments, what they don't have in stock they order for me, marked up of course. Looking into making my own char here soon, youtube has an awesome tutorial on it using wood pellets and then soaking it in EM-1 and IMO. I use crab meal in addition to my liming agent because I'm forced to use RO right now, tap waters rockin 600 PPM :o.

I really cant complain all that much though, 2 runs for 400'ish is still cost effective (and a far better medicine) than any bottle regiment ;).
