Hempy bucket- what am I doing wrong?

Hey there everyone,

I am growing a Burmese Widow in a 2qt Hempy bucket filled just with perlite. I bought the plant as a clone about 2 months ago and have not been able to give her what she needs. In the 2 months she has gone from a 6" clone to a 9" twig. I have done so much reading and yet just cannot figure it out.

My guess is a pH problem, but no matter how carefully I try to be with the pH nothing seems to get better. I am aiming for 5.8 which is what I read for hydro. When I spoke with my local hydro guy, he said that I should aim for 5.9 to be safe so I have been. Some other sites I have seen mention people using 6 to 6.2 for their hempy buckets. Am I right to consider my perlite hempy buckets as hydro?

If anyone can throw me a bone and point me in the right direction, I will give you the biggest high five ever!

I'm not familiar with hempy buckets specifically so not sure if you are doing it right or not but no plants like 80 degree water, ever.

It causes the root rot and slow growth problems you have. It may be you are missing part of the hempy system too or are using the wrong watering / feeding / flushing routine as well so hopefully someone who successfully used that type of setup will chime in.

Greetings OregonMeds! Thanks for popping in and sharing your advice. It was in some other thread where you shared your experience on spider mites and it really helped me out. Thank you for that!

As for the water temp, I don't know if it matters, but the water temps are more like 75-76 degs. Should I refrigate the soln a bit before feeding?

Thanks in advance!

Try giving it tap water instead of distilled.
I have been doing hempys for a long time and the seem to like tap better.

You're welcome.

Since you have root rot now using cooler water closer to 65 degrees is what's going to help cure it, drop some ice in your water before watering but not too much to where it goes below 65. Also hygrozyme is good for recovering from root rot.

You shouldn't have root rot, my temps are at 90 in the room.
Never had root rot in hempys.

temp in hempy if done right does not cause root rot i have grown outdoor in cali with hempy style setups no issues.

Hi Kal El,

Do you use nutrients that accomodate for the stuff already in the tap. The nutrients that I use specifically say its for soft water. The water coming out of my tap comes out to 170 ppm which I think is considered hard. Thanks.

I don't have anyway of controlling the temps other than the initial pour. The soln sits in the pot for several days.

800ppm out of the tap are you sure i would not even drink that. in the valley its at 300 and thats pretty crappy for growing.

My water is like 800ppm out of the tap, your water is not hard.
Wow, 800! That's pretty high. I will give it a shot and try to use some tap water. Since you have a lot of experience with hempys, can I ask you what pH you aim for when feeding? My girl has lots of twisted leaves which, from what I've read, is caused my pH problems. Unfortunately for me, whatever I have tried to control the pH doesn't seem to work.

I don't measure ph.
Been doing this long enough that I am dialed in.
Twisted leaves can come from heat and overwatering as well. Overwatering should not be a prob for you though.

Holy shit! So you just mix your nutes into your tap water and let'em have it?

What would you recommend I try?

Also, my older fan leaves have all turned yellow and dried out, which I was led to believe is N def, no? I think it's probably caused by pH lockout, but you make it sound so easy!

Do you remember what pH you wanted when you were first starting?

Many thanks.

you will get better results if you use ro i use to use tap never again. i only use it as a mineral supplement in a 1 to 10 ration every few waterings. nutrients are only available to the plant in a narrow ph range with ro its easy to stay in that range where with tap you have ph rebound and other issues like mineral salt buildup and nute lockout.

500ppm is the legal limit for tap water in the us so i dont know where hes getting 800ppm thats not safe to drink or legal anyways sounds like an exaggeration. those levels would not grow cannabis well. my water after adding ferts and other things is around 800 to 900. before ferts my ro is 5ppm. almost every pro grower i know or have read books by usr ro or something similar.

Also, I noticed some alge on the inside of your buckets, this is a sign that light is reaching your water and roots. The alge could be making your solution unstable and causing slow or deminished growth.
