hi everybody, been loving the herb for a couple years, finally decided to grow

Hi! Posting this to get my ass in gear, I'm really tired right now but I wanted to post.

MJ really agrees with my personal body chemistry, it makes me feel "normal" for lack of a better word, I'm kinda unemotional/down without it, not to a pathological degree, but I sure feel better when I've got even a little of it around, it's my natural antidepressant I guess. I liked it since I first tried it and I'm tired of having to hunt down a supply, so I'm going to take the plunge and start a grow soon. The people on this board seem to be on average really nice and helpful, so I'm joining up.

I'm gonna start a stealth grow soon, going to order from Attitude when their June 4-7 special is on, too good to resist. It's hard to focus right now, fatigue from work plus allergies I think, but here's some random info, I might repost this to a separate thread once I get more organized.

Strain: Probably "Master Kush", says it's a good beginner strain, also short, which is good as I'm going to probably grow inside some sort of cheap tub from Walmart etc

Lights: CFLs, they are cheap and available. This is going to be a cheap sort of grow. Gotta learn and start somewhere.

Grow medium: Soil. Probably some regular stuff from Canadian Tire etc. I've also got some basic liquid and solid houseplant fertilizer, should be fine for the herb as well.

Current equipment: Some plant pots, lots of power strips, some extension cords, an old PC that doesn't work but has a working CPU fan etc, fertilizer as noted above, brita water filter pitcher for making nice clean water.

Plan: Ideally I'd like a continous permanent grow. Small-scale, as it's for personal consumption, cheap, as I don't have a lot of money, and stealth, for the obvious reasons. I've read a fair bit from the various threads and have basic understanding of lights, the plants biology etc. Since the flower period is about twice as long as the vegging period, I'm thinking of maybe 3 boxes, call them Veg, Flower A and Flower B. Gonna start with seeds in Veg, then clone, move the clones to Veg, the mature plants to Flower A, and so on. Should allow a harvest every 5 weeks once the cycle is fully running.

Not going to obsess over details on this first grow. Going to water the plants with Brita filtered (carbon filtered) ordinary water, as needed, adding a small amount of liquid fertilizer every so often. I'll see how the plants respond and up or down the amount of water and fert accordingly. Going to let them veg for as long as they want under 20/4, hopefully get them nice and strong, then put them in the flower box for some 12/12 until hopefully I get some nice fat buds. :bigjoint:

Issues: Main issue is just the handyman stuff with lights, cutting holes in the boxes etc. I'm not particularly good at that stuff. I'm fine with plants and planning etc though, so it should work out. I'm not too worried about smell, as this is going to be small scale, with a non-super-smelly breed, in a closed room in my apartment, possibly in a closet if the boxes fit. With some odor killer chems it should be fine.

That's about all I can think of right now. Once I've made a bit of progress I'll post my grow journal thread. I figure the next step is strolling around a few stores and seeing what I can buy for cheap. I'm thinking I need CFLs, probably a cutting knife of some sort suitable for the type of box I buy, some sockets or whatever to connect the CFLs to the power strips, some sort of glue to glue the strips to the top of the box, potting soil, probably some fans, 1 intake and 1 outtake per box, 1 timer per box, maybe a PH sensor, moisture sensor etc, if they are cheap.

Comment and suggestions are welcome. Happy growing everybody. :leaf:

welcome to riu. sounds like a solid plan. you don't need a second flower area - it's more efficient to use one flowering area and have multiple generations in the same space. just put the younger ones on top of something so that their tops are at the same height as the older generation. you can have multiple generations in your veg area as well.

Hey Desertrat. Ah, good point. If I have enough space that would work. Saves me another box too.

Any suggestions on breed to start with? The thread on that subject seems to lean heavily to AK-47/48. I looked it up and it seems similar to Northern Light and Master Kush...it probably doesn't matter that much, they are all strongly related, genetically.

type of weed is such a personal question - depends on what kind of high you're looking for. seems all breeds are promoted as high thc so that's not really a way to choose. most people probably do what i am in the middle of, just try a couple, find what you like and start a mother plant for each breed you want to keep.

Welcome to the board!

One thing you might want to consider is the SMELL-- dank is, well, Dank. If stealth is what you are looking for, NL is much more subtle than AK47 (can't speak for AK48 ).

Very true. I've had a few different types so far, White Widow, which was great, one called "Burmese" that was really strong, nailed us to the spot for hours, and several kinda generic but still decent strains. I liked them all, though some were definitely stronger than others. Also, I noticed that there is a huge difference between how it affects you until you are "experienced" and afterwards. Initially I introspected like crazy and felt kinda messed up in the head, disassociated and out of control, mildly, though it felt great in my body. Now it doesn't mess me up at all, it's just a nice feeling. Though that could have partially been the strains involved. That's one of the things I love about MJ, it's so incredibly variable! The amount you take, what type, how that type was grown/cured, set and setting...it all makes a difference to the end result. I never get bored of it.

If the Attitude promotion is all it seems to be, I'll have at least 8 different breeds to sample, eventually. Not gonna try to grow them all at once. Looking forward to it. *sigh* Gonna be at least 4 months until I have some smoke. *sadness*

Thanks, glad to be here!

I'm keeping that in mind. Thanks for the info about NL and the AK, no one really mentioned its smell factor. Attitude's info says that Master Kush doesn't smell much, seems like it suits my requirements pretty well, being short and not that smelly. The high sounds like some of the stuff I've had, a nice feeling in your body and enhanced enjoyment of music. I really love how MJ makes music so much better. Food too. It's such an awesome sensual enhancer!

... and don't forget romancin'-- awsome with the herb.

Update: Got my seeds a week ago, used the paper towel method to germinate 6 of the Master Kush, all of them had a nice root after 3 days in my closet! I planted them in African Violet soil, small planters, in the order of the length of their root (so I can note if root length = vitality, later on). I made sure the soil was moist and I misted the top of the soil a bit after planting.

Now to wait for them to "arise".

Any advice on watering at this point? I'm thinking I'll just keep an eye on the soil and add a bit of water/mist when it seems dry. Don't want to drown the little guys or make them rot. I'm using plain water that has gone through a Brita filter and then rested for 24 hrs to let the chlorine dissipate.

Still haven't constructed my box. At this point I'm thinking of going with a great big cardboard box I'll buy from U-Haul. Seems like the cheapest solution. I shouldn't need it for a while, I'm going to let the babies grow in natural light for a bit first. My spare room gets a lot of sun so it should be fine. Once they are established, I should have the box made and I'll stick 'em in there for some CFL therapy.

I'll see if I can post pics once there's something interesting to post.

for babies you want to keep the soil slightly damp, even at the top. later on you'll want to let the soil dry out on top before watering.

Thanks for the tip.

Compressed saga thus far:

planted 6 White Label Master Kush seeds, all germinated using the paper towel method. some have died and I am now left with 3 seedlings:

#1 - was the definite leader, but is now rapidly being destroyed by something. Started with brown spots on the leaves, now has progressed to the point where several sets of the lower leaves have turned totally brown and withered. The weird thing is that it has been treated the exact same way as the other 2 plants, so I don't think it is under or over watering, lack of light etc.

#2 - in development, is just behind #1, and seems totally healthy and normal. I sure hope it is a female.

#3 - looks different from the other 2, I think it might be a mutant. First set of leaves is kinda "melted", overall it's kinda asymettrical, but it seems to be healthy, though it is behind the other 2 in development, mostly because it doesn't have as much foliage to gather light, I think.

I've also planted 3 other seeds in small planters filled with soaked potting soil. The breeds were Feminized Motavation, Fem Serious Seeds Chronic and Fem Sensi Star. Hopefully they will poke their little heads above ground soon, it's only been a day or two.

Gonna plant my remaining 4 Master Kush seeds tomorrow, just so as to increase my odds of eventually having a healthy female to act as a mother plant.

At this point I'm mostly growing them in natural light, but today I got a timer and I'm learning to use it with a nice little bendy-neck lamp that is adding some light to the seedlings. Got a box, timer, soil, water...all I need is some plug-in socket adapters, y-splitters and a few more CFLs and I should be able to start "box growing".

That's all I have the energy to type right now.

Woot! The three Fem seeds have sprouted and poked their heads above soil. Might see the 4 new Master Kush seedlings tomorrow too.

#2 and #3 have really developed. It's really cool to see them get bigger and stronger. Their stems have a nice green glow to them. Poor #1's stem is almost white, it looks feeble in comparison. It may still recover, we'll have to see.

Finally finished my simple cheap cardboard grow box design, going to pick up the needed materials ASAP, or rather as soon as I can scrape up some money for eight 6500K CFLs plus adapters.
