HID only sucks at lower wattage. After you hit the 200-250 watt range HID very quickly pulls away from any fluorescent known to man in terms of light output.

A 1000w HID would STOMP 1000w of CFL, but T5HO might be close and keep up with the HID. If they made a true 1000w actual CFL, I'd like to see it head to head against a 1000w HPS. then people could discuss this more with a more educated standpoint. i would have to agree with this person here. cant really say whats better, if there was a cfl bulb that was actually 1000 watts softwhite or EVEN 500 watts softwhite and 500 watts daylight lined up next to each other now THAT would be interesting to see against a 1000 watt hps

CFL's do put out a great spectrum and quality of light. There's just something about them that plants love but I'd only use them for very small veg areas with under 250w actual combined. For seedlings.

Beyond that it doesn't make sense to use them and like the op said he probably did spend more for all them than if he had bought one big hid to start with. drbudgreengenes is a great grower and he knows how to use them yes but he's only using them to be stubborn they aren't the best lights for his setup. He could do better with a couple small hid's or t5ho's of the same combined wattage.


This grow in the attached pic is done using one single 1000w warehouse light that was $50 brand new on ebay and just shultz nutes that were less than $10 and zero room prep. The only quality somewhat costly item I used was FFOF soil because it kicks ass over lesser soil but even my buckets were used food containers that were only 75 cents ea.

Obviously I don't care that much about it, it's just temporary but I show this pic because this is the best use of anyones dollars, you can't beat this with cfl's and I don't think anyone can beat the amount of weed I'm growing for the amount of money invested. I'm not sure if you can even see the light in this pic but it's a vertical 1000 in the middle of six plants. I modified the light to remote ballast with an old extension cord I had around here.

Way ghetto, less tyhan $100 in the entire grow but really effective:
