Do you recommend the 12 inch or 18 inch above the canopy?Hey!
HLG releases very little light intensity (PPFD) information about their newer lights.
If you're unfamiliar with PPFD, do a quick Google search. It's essentially light intensity quantified.
I was able to find a PPFD map here: https://www.ledgrowlightsdepot.com/products/horticulture-lighting-group-hlg-scorpion-rspec
I assume this is without a tent so you should add about 30% in the outer edges and 5-10% in the middle.
This would be on maximum blast.
Plants in early veg will do well with PPFD 200-300.
Late veg: 300-400
Early flowering: 400-600
Late flowering: 600-900
Half dim should give you half the light intensity (i.e. half the PPFD) so for early veg you'll want about 30% power. Late veg 50% power and mid flowering full power, according to the PPFD map above.
The values in the map above are measured at a 12" distance. It would be difficult to speculate how the PPFD values changes if the distance is increased to 18". 18" would give a more even light distribution but since HLG does not provide PPFD maps on 18" then we have no way of determining what the light intensity (PPFD) would be at that height, so with 12".
What yield from both lightI have the hlg 650r in a 5x5....I keep my light like 3 ft above during flower. That light is hella bright and will burn your plant. I start flower around 500w then slowly turn it up during stretch. Soon as they stop stretching, set at 3ft or as close as i can get it and full blast the light. I pull 666 from the wall full blast. Veg is tricky but you need more space between canopy and light. I had mine at 50% throughout veg and raised the light as the plants grew.
Run that light in flower full power @ 12ins you can kiss your buds goodbye. The ppfd maps are all on the website, at 12” and 18”. Get yourself a watt meter, half way on the dial is way more than 50% of max draw.

DITTO!!!!, and if you are able to and not melt your plants, please let us know how you did it!!!!Run that light in flower full power @ 12ins you can kiss your buds goodbye.
