HLG550 Dimming, Distance and what it means to you

Hello Guys, Long time lurker here....

With legalization legal in Canada Eh I decided to take the plunge and purchase the supplies to make an HLG550 replica from the legit source on Alibaba. This setup is being used in a 3ftx3ft tent. I understand I probably don't want to run more then 35W SQFT. (480w x 65% = 312watts over 9sqft = 34.6watts a sqft)

With that said I made this chart with PPFD reading (reading @ 18" at 100% power) found from sources online...

Are my calculations close to accurate? I highlighted 65% because that should be around the 35 I want for flower without an exhale bag. This would put me at 18" in flower and maybe 50%power at 24 in veg.... I've always had bad luck putting LED close in the past so I am a bit apprehensive and would appreciate your feedback.

You should consider getting the real 288s. They use top bin diodes on the boards and beyond that, are reinvesting into innovations and are good at being good contributors to the RIU community and available to ask questions. Shipping to Canada is a breeze and it's cheaper than you might expect. Either way, good luck with your build.

"replica from the legit source on Alibaba"

sounds like blatant copy of the real thing made in the land of cheap & nasty

If you support the original designer, Horticulture Lighting Group, you can contribute to the new factory, future light developments and chocolate biscuits for the lunch room.

I paid for that broom leaning against the far wall.

All jokes aside guys, HLG is using Samsung LM301B diodes and that is what the post pertains too. This isn't a discussion about ethics or getting the 'real thing'. Assuming they are real would the picture I posted in the first post of this thread be accurate?

I don't take anything personally that you guys say btw.... I would just like to know if my calculations are correct for dimming and distance.

I don’t trust alibaba website. I’d get the real Samsung boards at the least and hopefully you’ll be getting meanwell drivers.

I could answer that, but am more interested how you would feel

If you had invested time & $`s, designed something really good and some arsewipe in the land of cheap & nasty copied it
Unfortunately this is the sad reality of our economy today. Where would Auto Manufacturers be today if they didn't all copy the invention of the internal combustion engine? Companies copy each others design and innovations all the time, this is how we progress as a society.

Samsung invented the LM301B and HLG Innovated it. If i was thinking like HLG I wouldn't be worried that the average guy is going to source parts from a cheaper place because that isn't my intended target audience. The percentage of people who are going to source parts themselves and build their own platform is so tiny its not going to effect their bottom line. All the sold out signs point to this on their website. To answer your question how would I feel? I don't think the CEO of HLG is crying in his Ferrari anytime soon and neither would I....

@maxlev Now that we talked about my feelings you mentioned you could answer my question...would you be willing to do that now?
I said I could answer your query, but after reading your watery justification for intellectual property theft, I can`t be arsed.

Enjoy the "legit source" in the land of cheap & nasty.
If you have a warranty issue and they choose to loose the ability to understand you, lust smile.

For fuck sake what is wrong with you, HLG buys their shit from the same place the alibaba sellers do, stop throwing a fit because someone is willing to take a risk and try to get it cheaper. You know they don't use their own LEDs they just assemble the LEDs that come from samsung, just like ANYONE can do with the proper equipment.

If you don't mind a little DIY, strips have better distribution of the light.

You would actually have to infringe a patent for it to be Intellectual property theft. Good luck patenting a lighting fixture design unless it has some sort of new unique feature on it.

Thanks for the tip... I was actually considering adding some side vertical strips on each corner of the tent, but it seems to me like it might be a bit of overkill for a 3x3 area with the light I have now. I typically use a Mainline or Scrog method anyways. This seems like a good consideration for some side lighting if I were to upgrade my growing area in the future.

i use 400 watts LED in a 3x3. 18" from the canopy at flower works great for me.
just build it and run it and you'll figure it out. math only gets us so far.

good luck.
