You can use a fan dimmer and it will be quiter. Here's a pic of one I just installed. They run anywhere from 20-30 bucks.

I bought a simple dimmer switch cost me less than 10$

We wrapped ours up with egg crate foam and some old towels. Made it alot more quiet. The other thing is I wish we would have got insulated duct work, at least around the fan. Alot of the sound comes from the air movement through the duct work. Next grow I will upgrade to insulated duct.

Yeah I have half of my ductwork insulated, but I need to finish off the other half because it really does cut down on the noise a lot.
What you want to do to quiet the fan down pftek is hang it from the ceiling or wherever on bungee cords so that the vibration is not transferred over to the wall it is hanging from. Let me see if I have a pic some where as lights are off now and I can't actually take one right now....oh here it is!
Note how the fan is basically 'hung' on bungee cords. This eliminates the vibration transfer. You can also see my $20.00 Harbor Freight Tools 'router speed control' AKA 'fan speed control' hanging in the pic too.

Nice, my fan has rubber mounts so there is no vibe transfer.
By the way to GG a regular light dimmer switch is not meant for inline fans. You MUST have a controller specificly for fans. Light switch dimmers will not work with electric motors.

Yessir, and the bungee cords cost me $1.99 at Wal-Mart. Glad I could be of assistance!

No I seen it somewhere else but I am going to do the same soon. Just buy a bag of peanuts and cut holes on sides 4/6 inch for hose.
I went to Home depot over by all the lights and got a cord with a dimmer switch on it, 10$.
My inline fans pushes 420 cfm and it works fine?

You can build a box around the fan. The regular ducting does allow some noise from the air movement. Insulated is definitely better.
