Ok, so this is from an article in SKUNK mag, but its seriously so simple, i really should share this one with everyone who doesnt have a way to test the Ph of their grows, but seriously are in need of some type of tester, so they are able to from now on. I will include step by step instructions on how to prepare this.
RED CABBAGE Ph INDICATOR (words by Bud Villa)
For many small-time or beginner growers, its understandable to look for cheap, alternative ways to keep things running smoothly. This garden variety pH tester is as good as any tester on the market and about as organic as you can possibly get! Now, when your mother tells you to eat all of your veggies, you have a genuine excuse not to, lol.
You'll Need:
- A head of Red Cabbage
- A good knife and cutting board
- Small to medium sized sauce pan or pot
- Bowl
- Coffee Filter and Strainer
- Dropper bottles or small containers.
Step 1:
Peel off outer layer of cabbage and cut into small cubes.
Step 2:
Boil cabbage in pot with just enogh water to cover cabbage for about 15-20 minutes.
Step 3:
Strain your mixture through filter into bowl. -The used coffee filter can later be used as a pH strip once dry. - Let strained cabbage juice cool in the fridge or at room temp.
Step 4:
Once cooled off enough, put into dropper bottles or small containers for storage.
--Test the solution with liquids or solids that have various pH levels, like for instance - milk, baking soda, lemon juice, distilled water, ect..
pH colors using red cabbage pH indicator:
FULL RED -- 2.0
RED VIOLET -- 4.0
FULL VIOLET -- 6.0
Blue Violet -- 7.0 (neutral)
Full Blue -- 7.5
Blue Green -- 9.0
Green Blue -- 10.0
Full Green -- 12.0
Yellow -- 14.0
--I hope this helped out anybody who doesnt own a pH tester who desperately is in need of one due to unexplainable plant complications. Its quick, easy, and accurate. I actually made it for myself to see how it worked out, that way it didnt seem like i was just talking out of my ass when i posted it, lol.
