(How) can I transfer a plant to bigger netpot?

I have a plant growing in a 3 inch netpot and I want to transplant it to root spa bucket which has a huge 10 inch netpot. I won't take the plant out of the smaller netpot. Rather I intend to just sit the smaller netpot inside the larger one with hydroton surrounding it. The problem is that there are already good amount of roots coming out from the bottom. Will they be damaged if I just sit the roots between a little hydroton and then place the smaller netpot carefully? Or should I just continue in smaller netpot? Or are there any good ideas to somehow get it into the root spa? This is a really great smelling plant and I'd hate to see it die.

why do want to transfer? a 3 inch pot will grow huge plants. what really matters is the size of the reservoir

exactly that's why, the 3 inch pot's reservoir is small.. I want to use a bigger one, and in particular the root spa so that I can leave the plant unattended for extended periods. There are other workarounds like cutting a 3 inch hole in a square piece of wood, etc.. but I am looking for the easiest way

cut a 3 inch hole in something like this: 17 gallon tote.

i don't see how you are gonna be able to feed the roots thru the bottom of the 10" netpot without damaging a lot of them.

so I guess its not safe to

i'd be really careful if you do try it into the 10" netpot.

i guess you could just lay the roots into it, hold the plant with one hand and then fill in the netpot around it.

it would take a few days for the roots to start coming out of the bigger netpot.

how many gallons is the system you have?

i had 2 plants in a 27 gal tote. the roots were enormous and the pH was much more stable with the larger water volume

Cut the roots a little and cut a hole in new net pot.let roots into a cylinder shape and drop in.But as said why? I see no reason to do this.
