How deep to plant month old plants.

Got a question about how deep I can plant my seedlings when I put them in their outdoor spots. Basically, my plants started their life with the wrong spectrum CFL's and as a result are quite stretched. For the last 2 weeks they have been growing out in full sun and have much improved but on most of the plants the stalk is about 4" from soil to the first set of single-blade true leaves.

Because of their lankiness I had to stake them a week ago and now the top 1/2 of the stalks, above the zip-tie, is thicker since it moves with the wind.. and the stalk between the soil and the zip-tie is thinner since it is secured to the stake and can't move as much. When I put these plants in their permanent outdoor spots, should I bury the plant all the way to the first set of true leaves? Essentially burying about 4" of bare stalk that is currently above the soil?? Will the stalk rot? If the stalk is over a month old will it still root? I've heard some ppl say that they like to cut off the first set of true leaves and bury even deeper... good idea?

THanks

Thanks for the responses. I forgot I made this thread! I may trim the first set and bury really deep. I figure there a good chance more roots will come out of the stem, and the plan will be stronger if it isn't so tall when I transplant.

:) Yeah, my head's spinning from all the Q's I've been searching and trying to ask. I want to move my plants to their outdoor spots as soon as possible and I'm frantically trying to have everything done and learn everything I'll need.
