You cannot judge a plants ripeness by looking at the pistils. Some change color right away while others never change. Watch the trichomes, when they are mostly milky chop at your preference. Just don't wanna chop em' too early.

I have 7 gals going right now. If I had chopped when the early pistils died, I'd have chopped about three weeks ago. I've got two weeks left to go at least! New pistils will keep forming throughout the plants life. I don't know why so many people believe you can watch the pistils.

do the hairs not let you know that the plant is starting to ripen?? if not the what signs are there. i know about the trichomes but is there not something to let me know to start watching the trichomes i thought you started looking at the trichomes when the pistles changed color?

As the plant matures the new calyx (flower) will form making new pistals (hairs). As each calyx ripen the pistals in those individual calyx will shrivel and recede back. You're going to see a bunch of new calyx form with new pistals that shrivel, that's what makes up the bud. Think of MJ as having a 2 halves to flowering, a flowering, then a fruiting. When it comes time to harvest you're going to be looking for the trich color to turn amber. Like when an Apple changes color to tell you it's ripe.
Here's the order the plant matures so you know what to expect-

1. calyx and pistals form
2. pistal hairs turn color and shrivel back to calyx which will have started swelling
3. calyx swell with resin
4. **Now is when to look for trich color**

The trichomes can start changing color from the time they develope so you can't rely on just that to judge harvest time and pistals have nothing to do with it since they form and shrivel up up until harvest.
It's the combination of everything that tells you when the plant is done.

Just start watching the trichs around week 6 or so. I have seen more than one example of pistils NEVER changing color. I have also seen pistils completely orange with about 40% clear trichs. Dependent on the strain. Trust the trichs.

I harvested 2 about 6 months ago that finished in 6 weeks. Then the next month (I like to harvest every month) i harvested 2 more that took the same amount of time and 90% of the pistils had already changed and the trichs were about 60-70% cloudy and each yielded around 8 - 12 grams. (I like to harvest every month)

Thanks for all the information, this was a very informative thread on our strain of choice, the AB. (We got ours from marijuana-seeds.nl, if at all relevant) I just had a couple questions about it so I'm hoping someone will be as willing to answer my questions. We're thinking our girls may be ready to harvest real soon. Everyone pretty much stated that AB is usually mature enough around week 6, so are you saying week six just of flowering? Or is that 6 weeks including the flowering stage? If so, then should we go ahead and harvest our oldest girl, Bell. She is in week 8 (from germ). And did anyone ever figure out the THC levels of AB?
