try shining a little flash light at what you are looking at from the side.
And to everyone saying to just trim a bud or leaf off;
I don't know about you, but I don't judge the ripeness of a plant based on the trichomes from ONE, little part of the plant.
I check trichomes all over the plant, because they can and do ripen un-evenly.
