1 600 watt light will run you maybe 30 extra a month. They pay out is worth it.
any older appliance running poorly will use extra electricity. With the price of power, I think most people are conserving as much as they can. I don't think it's "easy" info to get at. If you turned your heat up or your a/c down, or plugged in a 600w light, they wont know. Are you looking to run 10 lights 8 fans? A personal grow will be hard to pick up on.

but what about the people who are getting caught just because of high electricity bills? it also puts you on the radar. you don't think it's obvious if you're running $300 electricity bills when every other neighbor is at $100?
if the cops are paying people at the utility company to rat people out there are a few people there that can rat you out.

An incandesent bulb is usually 100 watts most house's have more than six lights so thats at least 600 watts, if you switch to 20 watt cfl's on all lights it will most def leave you with a least a few hundered watts to use for some growing! Oh yea and people who get caught cause of high power bills are runnng mini farms in thier house's!

Uk hits it right on the MARK! I PITY the fools that haven't switched to cfl's for their ENTIRE home. Those "earth" sucking incandescent bulbs would have disappeared years ago but for the ignorance of the light consuming public. I'm in CA and there is a major push to convert. PG&E subsidized the distribution of 23 & 27 watt cfl's for .50 each! You can find them at all of the DEEP discount stores, 99 Cent Store, Dollar Tree, et al.
Anyway, you WILL catch flack from the HID folks for considering CFL, (some of them refuse to believe you can get a decent grow going without 1000's of watts flaming down on their girls, lol). My indoor set-up is only for germing & veg for clonage for the out-door grow in the Spring. I have a 200 cfl in a "Bright-Wing" overhead & 2 90's on each side, = 560 watts.
I compensate by keeping ALL other power usage to a minimum when the "nursery" lights are on. Seems to work ok for me. I wish you ALL, Good luck & good grow + Happy Holidays........BB

meh i doubt it people use solar panels all the time my buddy next door had his entire roof on his house covered with a giant expensive solar panel..

your bill is not going to increase that much just pay it as everyone is stating and your still going on and on. Where are all these people you claim are busted by thier power consumption. A basic guide would be to not go over 1000kwh per bedroom of your house. I am running a 1000, 600, 400 and a 150 HPS and my bill increased a whopping 150 dollars. This is not even double my normal usage, with all the electronic shit now no one cares about someone paying a bill. It does not stand out and unless your renting and not getting the bills just pay it and move on, its the smell that will get you cought not your power consumption

people that have 1000s of hid lights usually have tons of plants. how many plants are you vegging for the outdoor on only 560 watts? thinking about going the outdoor route as well.
dude, you got to watch your back. I don't see how people dont investigate all that these police are doing to catch you guys (whether illegal or not they will use these methods - many ex-cops and DEAs even admit it).

I think the first story is a bit off because 250 dollar a month electric bill is not high at all. The second article i see no reason why someone would need to be growing that many plants indoors. Anyway good luck.

I think both of those articles are bad examples for your case. The first one doesn't even have that much information in it, its obviously not the entire story. How can you draw conclusions based on that small amount of information?
I think the second one is even worse, did you even read it? The article says that the police didn't even start with the electric bill. There was other evidence that led them to believe there was a grow op there, and the electric bill just confirmed their suspicions.
Just pay your electric bill ON TIME, and don't do anything stupid like stealing power. Last year my wife and I left our space heaters running to much one month, and our bill went from around 100 to 318. I wasn't happy about it, but I payed it on time, and I never heard a peep from the electric ppl or from the 5.0.
