I love neem meal for my N source, Down To Earth has a 6-1-1 neem meal that does wonders in providing you with the N you need as well as the added bonus of integrated pest management. I also keep some 5-1-1 fish emulsion handy for those heavy feeders. The only amendments I use in my soil are neem, crab, and kelp meals. Basalt is my mineral amendment of choice, but gypsum works nicely and glacial rock dust is alright stuff too. In veg I have 5-1-1 fish emulsion for plants that use more nitrogen and flower I use 2-4-1 fish hydrolysate. I've had much greater success using neem/crab/kelp meal exclusively as opposed to anything else. It's much easier to add light amendments such as these and top dress more frequently in my experience. So what are most folks primary source of N? Is it usually EWC? I was rolling over the idea of getting my own worm bin for fresh castings.
Worm bins are a ton of fun for sure and they aren't too much of a pain to get going either! I just filled a rubbermaid tote with some peat moss, put my veggie scraps on top of the peat and cover that up with some newspaper or cardboard. People like to grab organic amendments such as neem meal and the like for the worms to munch on and it makes for great worm castings, you get out what you put in. Some people turn their noses down on using veggie scraps because it isn't as good as using organic amendments and/or manure and such, however I've always felt the point of a worm bin was to reduce the amount of trash we throw away. Even if you only feed your worms veggie scraps and newspaper, they'll still make good castings.
