I use zig-zag blue (cutcorners) or orange. I roll them thin at the ends and fat in the middle, with no filter, and no more than 0.1g of tobacco. Lights good, doesn't run, and burns increasingly slower due to resin build-up. Also, +rep to winter woman for having a nice taste in papers.

Forgot to mention my choice of papers. I personally like the raw papers a lot. I find that they taste much better but burn unevenly. But on a daily basis I smoke OCB blacks.
The reason people use filters is that you can 1) take smoother hits 2) not have to bother with resin buildups around the mouth tip and get that shit on your lips and fingers 3) smoke it all the way down to it's last hit without burning your fingers
The filters don't actually filter anything out, but it does prevent little chunks of weed (I call 'em scooby snacks) from falling into your mouth.

yeah i use a roach/filter/tip whatever you like to call it.
for those people who dont/ dont understand when we say filter, it isnt actually a filter like you would find in a ciggarette, its more just something to roll around/suck from without the paper collapsing when it gets wet (which it will if you dont use a roach)
you can get a better suck on your spliff and its better to hold your spliff with it in!
and recently i been using Raws for rolling, but otherwise its zig-zag blues for me!

i roll using either Rizla Blues or RAW papers if i have them available.
i have a little rolling box to where i can sit the rizla on a deck. it also catches all the little bits of weed for when you have a dry spell.
i used to use tobacco in my spliffs, as that is what all i knew bacause that is the norm in the UK. but recently over the past year i smoke only pure weed. and sometyimes tobbacco, but i try not to use it.

One thing I've noticed from living in different countries and areas of the united states is the style of rolling joints/spliffs.
My favorite way of rolling is the swedish way. The secret lies in the filter! We use the inside of a hard cigarette pack, inside the lid is a piece that looks like a 90 degree triangle attached to a square piece. We roll this in such a way that on one end of the filter there is a spiral of paper but on the other end it's hollow. Kind of like the filters on parliament cigarettes, for you smokers out there. Then we use a 50/50 mixture of tobacco and weed and roll it up in a cone shape. Unlike in the US we don't mind using such large amounts of tobacco since were all quite heavy smokers.
I noticed in Boston they tend to just roll with 100 percent weed and roll it without filter.
In San Francisco I see people rolling with filters and using small amounts of tobacco.
I understand that most people roll by their personal preference and it's not based by location, these are simply my observations
So, what is your way of rolling up?
where I'm from (south US) I've NEVER actually encountered anyone that used a "filter" in their joints...... nor tobacco.
100% pot (preferably top shelf), @ .5-1.0g, rolled in a classic zig (the zig-zag, orange 1.25 old head classic) .........
or for when I'm in the hood, its a optimo original leaf, split and rolled with @2g

I roll straight weed.......or if I do add something, it is definitely NOT tobacco. My buddy is an Aussie, and he packs bowls with tobacco/weed mix. If he smokes a doobie, it has to have tobacco in it, or he gets FUCKED UP.......stupidly.
I'll smoke a "filtered" doob, but won't roll one myself.......adds to much time between pre-launch, and the big blast.

i think a lot of people are getting the wrong idea with the filter thing. there is no cotton in the filter. as someone already mentioned (and i posted a pic) it's just a hollow paper tube that stiffens the end of the j. technically one could still get herb in their mouth but but it's unlikely. it's rolling luxury style. there is no "filtering" occuring at all.

I don't mix anything with mine, just bud. I use to do the W or M trick people are referring to as "filters" but the only reason to do that is if you are rolling too big of joints or rolling them too tight. To achieve these "filters" I would cut a little strip off the paper casing flap. Since my younger naive days I had an old timer hippie friend show me how to achieve a properly rolled joint, not too tight that your name needs to be Hoover to get a hit and not so loose that it runs. Smaller amounts will get you just as high as rolling a hog leg, while limiting the excessive amount of resin some of you seem to be getting.
