Trichomes show age (quite a lot of amber trichomes, not sure if you looked all over the plant though).
But from what I can see of the buds they look rather small.

What strain is it?

its a small plant. grown in a 3 gallon pot. i have 4 strains grown the same way. (in trees) they are all lst's. alaskan fish emulsion during veg and tiger bloom/molases in flower.
out of the 4 plants i expect a somewhere between 1/2-3/4 lb. im very happy with that for a personal (first time) grow.
should i chop?

It's hard to call without seeing the entire plant but if it is a small-ish plant then I'm sure it's been grown fully with a 3 gallon pot.
I'd say chop sooner than later if you are seeing more amber trichomes (have you taken other trich pics from other parts of the plant to get a full picture?).

How do you get a sample of the bud without cutting? I didn't even want to cut a leaf off the bud.

The latest images you posted are quite hard to make a prediction from.
All I can see are a few amber trichomes, some clear and some cloudy.

In any case it's better to harvest a bit late than early.
