How far apart should plants be from each other?

I've seen some growers squeeze 10 plants in a 4X4, seems awfully crowded. I plan on growing four plants, I figure it's better to give them more room to breath; I could get a 3X3 or a 4X4 grow tent.

All depends what kind of grow your setting up

depends on your lighting your using, 12-16in is always a good distance to go by is go 18 in if i was using hps or mh. New growers often put the light to close which can cause new forming growth to be small and going away from the light.

Right now I've got a 400 watt hood for an HPS, MH setup. However I'm trying to produce a year supply for my medical needs and can upgrade to a 600 watt if necessary if I were to get a 4x4.

Id say keeping your lower areas clean so you can keep a steady oscilating breeze in there is optimum. your plants sizes will dictate your needs....give me pics lol

If you have decent access to the entire area, 1 square foot per plant if you flower when they're small. I'll run plants at about 2-3 square feet per plant but I mainline mostly...

Your 400 watt light will do 4 plants just fine. Get the 4 x 4 and set them up equidistant from each other. You'll be just fine.

i do 4 in a 3x3, fimmed and some lst, 3 to 5 gallon pots, 60 day average flower strains, 4 different strains tho. that will net 12 ozs of jar able top grade buds and a crap load of larf and trim for extracts, basically every 60 days...but as they come out, next one goes in, so now its all cattywompus, lol. i have one due in a week, one about 10 days, one about 3 weeks...cheese about 5 weeks....then im done for this year

To more accurately answer your question, we need a more precise question. If you're interested in doing a perpetual harvest, the 4x4 could pump out 2-3+ ounces every week.

as long as you are at least less than one tenth the distance between as @Mellowman2112 is from reality, you should be ok, although you still might end up on the 'airy' side...

Okay yeah, I'll be looking to get 20 ounces of product; is that possible with four plants?

So 100 watt per plant is good enough? I am kind of new to this, meaning I haven't developed a routine quite yet. I got some white widow seeds and just started one almost 2 months ago and I got 200 watt cfl on it and it seems to be doing good. Next year I'm hoping to have a better set up and be better prepared.

^ Yeah sort of the same question. I have been told that I can get 20 ounces out of four plants, but wasn't sure if you could fit four plants in a 3x3. Now not sure if I have to get a 600 watt setup to produce a good 20 ounces, and in that case I would have to get a 4x4.

So basically is it possible to produce over 20 ounces of product in a 3x3 with four plants under one 400 watt fixture? Not just possible even, is it ideal?

Here we go again:

You're being sold a bill of goods by somebody that's not telling you the whole story. People try to make things sound like they're automatic: You buy this and that and you'll get X.

With some simple topping under a 400 watt HPS, you can easily get 2.5 to 3 ounces per plant. If you expect to get 5 ounces per plant or more, you're going to pretty much have to scrog it, which is a whole lot more work.

Also, don't think of it as watts per plant. You're talking about an area, not a plant. A 400 watt HPS will cover a 4 x 4 area pretty well. That's why if you get the 4 x 4 tent, the 400 HPS is all you need to fill it with light. Would a 600 do a better job? Well, yea, but only slightly more so. You wouldn't notice a huge difference in plant growth, but you would notice a difference in bud growth and quality.



So if I were you, and were going to grow in a tent, I would get the 4 x 4 no matter what light you decide to go with. The 400 you already have will do just fine in it. A 600 would be slightly better, but again, don't think it's a night and day difference. It isn't.

Do a LOT of reading. You have a lot of folks who tell you a lot of numbers without explaining how they go about getting them. It causes a hell of a lot of confusion, especially when someone goes out spending tons of money, don't get those type of yields, and can't figure out why.

ok, 400 watts in 16 square feet is 25 watts per square foot. thats total bullshit, a 400 watt will not properly light a 16 square foot tent. this shows why you need to do your own research, people on here think they know everything, most cant do simple common sense math.

So every single reputable lighting supplier on earth is wrong and you're right?

The grow area of a 400 watt HPS bulb is 4 x 4 or 16 square feet. The typical 400 watt HPS bulb puts out 55,000 lumens in that area from a height of 24". That comes to 3,437 lumens per square foot. The recommended median rate for marijuana growth is 3500 lumens per square foot. The 400 watt light will grow 4 plants to a very good result in that area.

Would a 600 be better? Sure it would. The more the merrier. But to say it wont do is just flat out stupid.
