How far should lights be from the plant?

I have 7 CFLs how far away should i keep them from my plants?

1-2 inches

hi,
it does'nt matter how far you put them away or how close with cfl's as there is very little heat.
dont have them more than 1 ft- 1.5 ft and it will stop them streching to the light.
