How is my plant doing? When should I start flowering?

I have no idea what kind of strain I have. It is about 9 weeks in to the growing cycle. some leaves toward the bottom are dying, and other leaves are curling up. I'm guessing that's okay. I'm growing in New York in a sun room. The plant gets about 12 hours of sun a day. what do I do in order for the plant to start growing buds? should I reduce light? How would I do that? I attached some pics.

I hate to piss on your picnic, but those plants dont look so good. They really need stronger light then your giving. Also only grow 1 plant per pot. Dont reduce light. Do some reading on Hortaculture.

time to grow until flowering is typically related to hieght restrictions.... They look a little stretchy ( typically means light is restricted or not direct enough) . and at 12 hours they will flower... but only if theres no major light leaks... i.e. any house light. Im not trying to be rude but the fact you dont understand light cycles yet means you have huge opportunity to grow as a gardner. Pick up Jorge Cervantes Grow Bible or Ed Greens.... Or Ed Rosenthals indoor handbook. Any of those three will cover enough of the bases to get you through a first grow coupled with an eagerness to learn it . the fact you got them as far as you did with out those materials is major Kudos to you!!....... most veg (growing) light cycles are 18on/6off, 20on/4off or 24 hours a day on (costly and most growers dont use this last option)for flowerin you will always use 12/12 unless you have an auto flower which if you didnt sfecifiy and order from a seed company yours most certainly are not. This is just the tip of what there is to learn about lighting alone.... watering and environment are huge as well so I would tell go get a book or all 3 .

I am going to get a 400watt grow light. You seem pretty experienced. How long should it be in 18 hours of light until I switch to 12 hours?

You really need more than just a grow light, you will also need some sort of carbon filter for the smell - when flowering starts. As Guido suggested, get yourself some books, or at least learn some more first. Those plants have a ways to go, so you have time.

yes those plants are stretched to the max. and for how long should you wate until you start flower its, depends on your goal lights . room you have. personally I veg mine for 3 months get it 3 feet tall before I start flowering. not rec for a rookie. shit can hit the fan to quick unless you have every thing dialed , if your new I would veg a foot tall then flower . plants seam to be a lot more forgiving the shorter they are. the taller, more experience needed , and a lot more money in your set up is required ! trust me

At 9 weeks those plants should be much larger. I don't know if you can successfully grow MJ as if it were a house plant but it's probably not going to turn out the way you think it will. Good luck with it though and do some research in the meantime if it is something you really want to do.

If it's your first grow, well done for starting dude. As mentioned before in this thread your babies lacking some light. If they are growing in a sun room I assume they get direct sunlight, reason for the stretching in that case would be the glass that blocks out certain spectrums of UV. There's really nothing you can do about it except work with what you have got. With regards to flowering your babies, you have a while to wait so I suggest training your plants. Research the FIM tech: https://www.rollitup.org/general-marijuana-growing/18782-fim-vs-topping.html

In natural light these plants veg in summer (I assume it's summer by you). Your babies will only start flowering in winter (to produce seeds for spring) as these plants do.

Woah, those plants look like my first window grow when I was 14! Problems: Stretching for more light, no fim/top, 2 plants in 1 pot, slow rate of growth. Answer: get them more light, seriously, lots more light. Then FIM the plants (you can LST also but for a beginner topping or fimming is a bit easier. it also looks like you could transplant them into a bigger plant pot.

Lets say your end result is the desire for big plants that could fit in a 6 foot high tent. With that in mind Sativa strain would do well with a one week veg and three month flower. Indica strain would do well with a 4 week veg and 2 month flower.
