How large of an area can a 400W Metal Halide cover?

I am using a 400W Metal Halide to do my vegging with, and was curious what size of a area is that capable of vegging? Is it big enough for a 3'x5' veg area?

I also have 2x 600 Watt HPS lights for flowering, and was wondering what size area they will be able to amply cover?

Is there a way to figure out how big of an area a light can cover based on it's wattage?

Anyone? I could really use some advice, as my grow room plans are on hold until I can figure out what size area my 400W MH and 600W HPS lights can cover and I have seedlings that will be ready for some real lights in a week or two.

Your 400 will do a 4x4 area in veg maybe just a little smaller in flower..Ive got two 600s in a 7x7 room but I could do a bigger area If I had it..

How much light is needed?
The minimum amount of light required by marijuana plants is around 3000 lumens per square foot. However, it's not 100% accurate, since although you may have a 10,000 lumen light, the amount of light that reaches the plant varies with the distance between the light and plants, and reflectivity of the grow box. The ideal amount is somewhere around 7000-10,000 lumens/sqft, and as long as the plants do not burn, as much light can be used as you want.
(*note, the sun produces about 10,000 lumens/sqft, on a sunny summer day).

So with 2x 600 Watt Eye Hortilux Bulbs, at ~ 88,000 lumens each, I can adequately light a 17.6 Square foot area?

And does this also apply to a scrog?

Thanks again for the information and advice, I have been reading the forums, often for an hour or two at a time pretty much every day for a month, but there is an overwhelming amount of contradicting information about lighting out there.

with 2 600w lights you can easily cover an 8x8 with plenty of light. This covers ANY type of growing method you're planning on using. 17.6 is fine for 1 600, let alone 2. Make sure you don't have a heat issue because of the lighting.

Your lights will rock in 18 sq,ft.I run the sea of green in my room sometimes and really pull some wieght out of two 600s...peace

It doesn't. 1 400 for UP TO a 6x6. Flowering, 2 600 will cover UP TO probably around 8x8. So veg. 36 sq tops. flowering. IMO 64-81 sq. ft.
